But I'm also starting to look forward a bit. Come this December the Snooze will be exactly 20 years old. That week, I plan to publish the very first issue. But in the meantime, if for nothing else to keep me reminded of the upcoming 20th birthday, I thought it would be nice to, each week from now on, read something that was published in the Snooze ten years ago, if noone has any objections of course... Ten years ago, the top story was about the scandalous events that took place in Italy, where the police raided many of the BBSs, effectively shutting the entire Italian region down. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 21-21 Page 2 24 May 2004 ================================================================= GENERAL ARTICLES ================================================================= The secret ZCC? By: Renato Zambon, 4:801/161 Bj”rn, you gave me an idea :-) You can remember in last ZCC decision I did open my vote and considerations. Now, instead of open only my vote, I'll wide open the ZCC, you and anybody else who have curiosity can download all msgs from this mysterious echo since sep/2003 from http://www.rbt.com.br/zcc2004.zip (258 msgs in JAM and QWK formats), freq/dnload it from my BBS, read them and get your own conclusions. Please add this message to the next fidonews edition, with this file inside (166kb) if possible. Now we have a new IC elected by 5x1 votes and a funny reaction from Ward (who I did defend in some points as you can verify in the msgs) to attempt decree void this decision and the ZCC, or maybe just an excuse to don't recognize it. What does all this situation mean? Maybe nothing: echomail, netmail and filecho are flowing normally, with, without and in spite of the *Cs and theirs endless discussions. []s Renato Zambon, 4:801/161, 4:4/0 ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 21-21 Page 3 24 May 2004 2nd part By: Renato Zambon, 4:801/161 Hi Bj”rn! Please, the message was ok but don't pack that file with the fidonews, it's not available anymore in the site nor in my BBS. That's a demand from Malcolm and Janis to decide about this in ZCC before. And please, add this message in sequence to the other for fidonews. Anyway, the prank is done, and some did see it already :) Here are some comments collected, positive in general: --------------------------------8<------------------------------------ Gordon Lewicky: Thank you very much, Renato, for your insight. Everybody should grab it. :) Gordon Lewicky (to Malcolm Miles): I grabbed the archive that Renato put together of the ZCC area last night and read your platform response to him. To my very pleasent surprise, you had stated all my beliefs as to how one should be an IC, way before I stated them in here and other echos, without me even knowing your stance. I have no doubts that with you as the IC and along with your fellow like-minded peers of the ZCC, Fidonet is now extremely well served. Gordon Lewicky: My take on it is I have a new respect for the thoughtfulness of the ZCC. Robert Bashe: Very good. It would have been even better had Malcolm done this, or for that matter Ward or Janis. Dan Egli: I did :> MOST informative. Puts a new _POSITIVE_ light on Ward I'd not seen before. I still think it was time for him to go but I'm not so sure he's a rotten SOB anymore. At least, not for as long as I had origonally thought. Douglas Connor: Thank you for the zcc files :) Manuel Adorni (his question was how to crosspost in GoldED :) ): ¨Que se ponia al principio del mensaje cuando queres que se auto- copie en otras  reas? Ioram Sette (received that with humor): hahahahhahaa O tempo passa e essas briguinhas continuam! :P Nem acreditei qdo li... Sinceramente, nessa altura do campeonato, o que faltava era um racha na Fido! hahahaha Se isso acontecer, a gente recria a RBT! LOL! Janis Kracht (didn't aprove, but received it in good temper): FIDONEWS 21-21 Page 4 24 May 2004 Yes, I saw that.. all I could do was laugh (...) Without all of our permissions :) --------------------------------8<------------------------------------ This quote from one of my messages to Ward is interesting too: --------------------------------8<------------------------------------ >> Inevitable that an inter-zone issue between two "big" zones would >> be decided by the smaller ones. If Z5 and 6 had abstained and not >> counted you would still have 2x1 and the same result. WD> Not if I had voted along ... the honourable thing would have been WD> for Janis to remove herself from the voting as she was in the line WD> of appeal ... as I have done. Right now it means that the ZCC has "If after a period of 30 days ending February 24th 2004 at the same time of this mail the ZCC has not overturned this ruling by a majority vote then it becomes enforceable. As there are 6 listed ZC's the majority needed to overturn this ruling is "4" ZC's." Yes if you had voted, in your own words. Moreover, when you counted 4 as majority of the ZCs, you were including your and her votes as not only valid ones for the matter but required to form a majority. --------------------------------8<------------------------------------ And this from Malcolm: --------------------------------8<------------------------------------ If elected I will remain as IC for a limited period, either one or two years. After that time, another election will be held at which I may choose to stand for re-election. I believe that no *C position in Fidonet should be appointed for life. (... ...) If elected IC I would also take closely to heart the words of Policy 4 where the IC is described as the first among equals. While the IC may be spokesman of the ZCC, all ZCs should be able to participate equally in any decision to be made. I don't believe that this is currently happening. I would not go around bad-mouthing zones or ZCs, each zone has an equal right to representation on the ZCC, irrespective of their size. I also believe that having an IC from one of the smaller zones may help reduce some of the tension and antagonism between the two largest zones. --------------------------------8<------------------------------------ And finally my vote posted there: --------------------------------8<------------------------------------ There are two weeks that Janis called for this votation and five days since Malcolm confirmed himself as candidate. Even if the result is already clear, I'll send my vote as promised for today. Thanks to Janis, Malcolm, Ward and Bin Li for the replies to some of my questions. Unfortunately Richard seems haven't readed my msgs here and opted for a personal offense on the same basis he was angry when FIDONEWS 21-21 Page 5 24 May 2004 Ward made it. I never offended any other ZC and hope the same respect. I do admire Ward work in Z2, have the better organized segment while in the largest zone definitely isn't an easy task. He has shown many times be attentive to any problem in nodelist, from his own and other zones. Despite the size disproportion, I do use the Z2 segment as a good reference to be followed by Z4. As said before, I didn't see Ward explicit will in remove zones, don't believe he would try that, and I would oppose in this theoretical case I think however that he didn't make enough effort to negate and avoid that the rumor was spreaded from IC echo to some other areas, and that he was sometimes offensive and stick on formalities to delay decisions here. Janis seems sometimes hasty or dramatic. But both always helpful when I needed for any reason. I think there isn't much more to add for now, and I'll give this time my vote to Malcolm Miles as new IC. --------------------------------8<------------------------------------ I did suggest also before to ZC5 clean its ghost regions and ZC6 update its own nodelist entry that has a voice phone listed as CM. Bin Li said he is going to use a new 24/7 line for the next month, and Richard already sent his considerations to IC echo. It's boring have to read messages in many areas, endless discussions in a foreign language, to decide rightly about these questions... I think 99% of the nodes don't care if the IC is one, the other, two as listed in this week nodelist or nobody. But good luck to the new spokesman of the ZCC! []s Renato Zambon, 4:801/161, 4:4/0 ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 21-21 Page 6 24 May 2004 ================================================================= REBUTTALS TO PREVIOUS ARTICLES ================================================================= Re: Open letter to the nodes of Zone-2 From : Robert Bashe 2:2448/44 To : Janis Kracht, Ward Dossche ============================================================== Janis Kracht wrote to Ward Dossche on Sunday May 16 2004 at 21:02: I'm also addressing this to Ward, since although I'm talking to you, this is also his concern. JK> I'm so sorry Ward. If you'd kept up in the ZCC echo you'd see JK> that you are no longer the IC and your edicts do not signify. JK> Here's the post that I also attempted to deliver to Bjorn a few JK> days ago... You know, Janis, all this would be a good deal more convincing if you would let Malcolm speak for himself. In fact, it would be even more convincing if the ZCs of the "lost zones" would speak up and show they're alive and kicking by something more than an occasional - or specifically solicited - email to you. As things are, I can't avoid the impression that you and Ward are effectively the only persons involved here, and that the present mess results from your resentment of Ward's judgement on Michiel van der Vlist's complaint against Roy Witt. You'll remember that I also thought Ward made a mistake on that call, and said so here and elsewhere. I also think he made a mistake in changing the ZCC voting rules, going from a "one zone, one vote" situation to proportional representation without the agreement of those concerned. I wrote him that in enet.sysop, and append the text for your interest. However, you may also note that I consider such a change neither unfair nor undemocratic, merely inopportune and heedless of the feelings and rights of the smaller (in nodes) zones. Presumably the change stings in Z1 particularly, since by the same rules, no other zone would have had anything to say about fido administration in earlier times, when Z1 was the largest zone. That's why I think it would be best to simply stick to the old rules - while at the same time requiring anyone who wants to vote as a ZC to actually _be_ an active ZC and not merely a nodelist entry or email address without any sign of life for months and years. _That's_ something that doesn't sit well with Ward, and I can't say I blame him for objecting. Now, where's Malcolm? What does _he_ have to say, and I don't mean filtered or passed on by you, but he himself? Does he agree with something that effectively splits fido and eliminates the worldwide FIDONEWS 21-21 Page 7 24 May 2004 organization? Because that's what's happening now, forced both by you, and in reaction by Ward. You may be interested to hear that the first person has already asked Ward whether now ZCs are also to be elected on the basis of proporational representation of the regions, larger regions getting more votes. The question, unsurprisingly, came from a Russian, since on that basis the next Z2C would be Russian. My point is this: you and Ward are at each others throats for no better reason than both of you have been infected by the hotheads in your respective zones. And the discord is threatening to tear fido apart. Why don't you two play politician - if Malcolm is more than just a figurehead in this, he's naturally included - and attempt to get some reasonable compromise, in the interest of fido? Forget the hotheads: Roy Witt and Michiel van der Vlist simply aren't worth tearing fido apart. How about this: the questionable ZCC "election" just past is considered void, the same goes for Ward's change in voting rules, and both of you get together to try to get some kind of reasonable scheme for any future disagreements that won't immediately lead to such confrontation. Both of you would be doing fido a great favor. Cheers, Bob = ENET.SYSOP (2:2448/44) ============================================= Msg : 476 of 500 Snt Loc Scn From : Robert Bashe 2:2448/44 Mon 17 May To : Ward Dossche Subj : Open letter to the nodes of Zone-2 (from a Fidonews submission ====================================================================== Ward Dossche wrote to All on Monday May 17 2004 at 00:27: A great deal, which boils down - as far as I can see - to the following: - On the basis of past events, of which we are both aware, you decided to weight the ZCC votes according to the existing (theoretical) sizes of the zones in the nodelist. That would mean that, in contrast to the past, Z2 would effectively dominate the ZCC, leaving you as Z2C _and_ IC free to do more or less what you please in administrative matters. Such weighting is not unusual in voting matters, and is also not "undemocratic", but if done without the consent of all concerned logically leads to discord. You remember that in the US Congress, the House of Representatives is selected on the basis of state populations with the largest states having the most representatives = votes, but the Senate is "one state, one vote". And that financing bills must originate in the House, but also be approved by the Senate, so both houses are interdependent. FIDONEWS 21-21 Page 8 24 May 2004 Your above move _replaces_, as it were, the Senate by the House. And thus it is understandable that Z1, in the person of Janis Kracht - and presumably any of the other zones still alive in a normal sense - are up in arms. This is presumably the reason for your second piece of information that: - Z1/Janice is calling for replacement of the IC. Frankly, unless you can work out some kind of dual system (representation _and_ "one zone, one vote") I think the concern of the other zones that they are out in the cold without an overcoat is not unjustified. The fact that you immediately used your new apportionment scheme to defeat a ZCC vote calling for Malcolm Miles to become IC may have been understandable, but was throwing oil on the fire, since that demonstrates to the rest of the zones how little their votes count. Actually nothing under the new scheme. They might as well not be there, and you can be confident that Janice realizes that. I discount your complaints about abusive language and "Nazi" reflections, since from what I've seen in FN_SYSOP, the radicals from Z2 give at least as good as they get. If you're going to come down on one side, you must also come down on the other to be fair, or be considered fair. But your own position has been anything but in the middle, which makes that difficult and gives people on the side you obviously disfavor the impression that this change in voting rules is just an attempt to stifle the opposition. Frankly, I in your position would have left things as they are, since you have little to gain except more problems by rocking the boat at this point. But now that the wasp's nest has hit the fan, all you can do is try to arrange some kind of "one zone, one vote" system to accomany the proportional voting system. Otherwise it's going to be everyone against Z2, and unfortunately with some justification. Our main focus should only be about how do we increase the pleasure of our hobby. How can we spread the word, share users, increase Fidonet's visabilty in the point and click world out there. I see a lot of people saying Fidonet is the echos. Hogwash! Fidonet is the BBS's within the network. I have been flogging my users for years to get them interested in the echos, and to this day, only a small percentage of my users ever venture into them. However, they do msg each other in the local areas, talk like crazy in the games, just love beating up on other BBS's in IBBS and enjoy the fact that they can converse with others from around the world in a secure environment, not via the echos, but in the games, online chats, msgs to other nodes, log off comments, and in the local msg areas. It's the technology of FTN networks that spins the BBS world, not the network itself. You and I as Fidonet sysops, are just cogs on the gears, with the users of the world turning the crank which makes us work. The biggest laugh is on ourselves, if we think the politics of Fidonet has any meaning to BBS's. The plain and simple truth is all this bru-ha-ha is meaningless to the people that count, our users. The sooner we realize that Fidonet is nothing but a dedicated group of puter nuts doing their best to push files back and forth, the sooner we'll all have a smile on our face. :) Fidonet is not about whether I can actually drop mail off at any arbitrary system, who just happens to hate my guts, or who's the IC or how many zones we have, or whether we should have 1 node nets. It's about you and me, sitting at our desk, ensuring the system operates as smoothly as we can make it, answering questions from the users, getting files for them, helping them understand how modems work, how to fix their puter problems, getting them unstuck in games, talking them through some point and right-click road map to happiness and answers on their system. Fidonet is not about you or I, or Ward or Malcolm, or 20 or 2000, or Vlist or Witt. It's all about our users. Keep your users happy, you'll be happy. :) Cheers... F I D O N E W S -- Vol.11 No.21 (23-May-1994) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Fabrizio Sala Hello. I'm the Sysop of one of the BBSs in Italy. I'm writing this message in this list to inform you, the BBS community, of what is going on in Italy. Some days ago, starting from Pesaro (Italy), our Police started a large perquisition through [inquisition against] many Amatorial [amateur] BBSs, mostly connected to the main networks (One for all: Fidonet... but also PeaceNet and many others) They're getting everything they can find: computers, monitors, drives, hard disks, floppy, cdrom, streamer tapes ... everything, without looking if they are or not in any way "illegal" ... Generally, every network in Italy is now full of holes... and many of us lost everything "in the name of the anti-piracy"... Nobody of us is doing anything in any way illegal, but they are still getting everything... They got more than 50 BBS and Police's work is still going on... I hope that everyone diffuses this message ... or in any way tells everybody what's going on ... ...and if you have any way to help us...please do it! We made our best to make the italian telecommunication scene working... they are killing us! See you later... if they don't get me! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Cesare Dieni For your information I report what's happening in Italy at the moment (N.B. after the last election a fascist governement succeded).... Fidonet Crackdown in Italy On May 10-12 1994, the first nationwide crackdown on telecom nets was operated by Italian police. FIDONEWS 21-21 Page 12 24 May 2004 Acting after a warrant issued by a Prosecutor in Pesaro, about 60 Bullentin Board Systems throughout the country have been visited and searched by police officials. Dozens of people were formally accused of "distribution of illegally copied software and appropriation of secret passwords" under the law approved by Italian Parliament in January this year. In several cases police officials didn't know what to search for, thus seizing computers, floppy disks, modems along with electric outlets, answering machines, audiotapes, personal effects. The raids also hit private houses and belongings, and in some places sleeping people were abruptly woken up facing machine guns. After searching probably around one third of the entire network - that includes more than 300 BBSes - police officials closed several Fidonet nodes, but no arrests were made. A still inaccurate figure of people were charged with software piracy, and dozens of computers and related devices were seized - along with thousands of floppy disks, CD-Roms, W.O.R.M.S. Moving after a suspected software piracy ring run by people involved in a Fidonet node, the crackdown started in the night between May 10 and 11 in Milano, targeting in the two following days BBSes in Pesaro, Modena, Bologna, Ancona, Pisa and other cities. Fidonet Italia, member of the worldwide Fidonet network, is a non-profit organization devoted to distribution of shareware and freeware programs as well as to electronic forums on topics ranging from technological to social issues. An essential communication tool for several groups and individuals throughout the country, Fidonet Italia became an active multi-cultural vessel and distributor of several different nodes dedicated to specific issues: Peacelink (solidarity, human rights), Cybernet (cyberpunk), Ludonet (games), Scoutnet, Amynet, and others. For thousands of Italian people, Fidonet BBSes today are invaluable tools of information-exchange, social activism and professional activities. The network policy strictly prohibits any distribution of illegally copied software and fraudulent appropriation of secret passwords. Also, Fidonet is one of the few International organizations which has always stated and pursued a clear position against unauthorized copying software. At the moment, the raids seems to be motivated by accusations against two people involved in a Pesaro-based BBS who were using Fidonet contacts to allegedly distribute illegal copies of computer programs. However, there are no reasons for such a vast law enforcement operation. Most likely the prosecutor acted simply on the basis of the Fidonet telephone numbers list (publicly available) owned by the two suspected of software piracy. The vast majority of the people searched don't have any kind of relationship with the suspected, and many of the search warrants stated a generic "conspiracy with FIDONEWS 21-21 Page 13 24 May 2004 unknown" for the crime of software piracy. Particularly, the random and arbitrary seizures of floppy disks and personal computers are completely unmotivated, because every BBS is a completely independent structure and each sysop is running his/her own hardware and software. The seizures will resolve in a great economic loss for these people and their professional activities will be surely affected from negative publicity. Some of them own small computer-related companies while others are physicians, hobbyists, students who risk personal savings to run their services. Because police officials also seized electronic and paper archives containing data and numbers of the people who logged onto Fidonet nodes, it is evident that investigations are going even further - thus violating the constitutional right to privacy. The first result of this crackdown is that many Fidonet operators decided to shut down immediately their systems all over the country, fearing heavier police intrusions in both their public activities and private lives. While the Italian Parliament recently approved specific laws about copyright and piracy of computer software, there are still no rules to protect personal privacy in the electronic medium. This legislative void inevitably makes the sysop the only responsible person about anything happens onto and around his/her own BBS. Fidonet operators do not want and can not be the target of undiscriminated raids that, forcing them to closing down their activities, cause serious damages to themselves as well as to the entire community. In an article published Friday 13 by the newspaper "La Repubblica", Alessandro Marescotti, Peacelink spokesperson, said: "Just when the worldwide BBS scene is gaining general respect for its important role at the community level, in Italy the law hits those networks that have always been strongly against software piracy. Charging dozens of honest operators with unmotivated accusations, the main goal of this crackdown is directed against the social activities of small community nets - thus clearing the space for commercial networking." While terms and figures of the entire operation should still be clarified, on Sunday 15 Fidonet Italia operators will meet in Bologna to study any possible legal counter-action. -- Cesare ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 21-21 Page 14 24 May 2004 ================================================================= BEN RITCHEY'S FIDONET SOFTWARE LISTING ================================================================= -=:{ FIDONet Software Reference }:=- Type: M=Mailer T=Tosser B=BBS D=Door C=Comm/Terminal P=Points E=Editor I=Internet U=Utility ?=Info .- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -. |Software: Author |Type |URL, Contact, Ver, Notes Help Node| `- - - - - - - - - - -+- - -+- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -' Argus |M |http://www.ritlabs.com/argus/ 2:469/84 | | argus@ritlabs.com Tel: 373-2-246889 | | v3.210 on Mar 20th 2001 BeeMail: |M |http://beemail.gexonline.net 1:105/10 Stephen Proffit | | beemail@gexonline.net BinkleyTerm XE |M |http://btxe.sourceforge.net 1:1/102 | | v2.60XE/Gamma-6 on Nov 11th 1998 BinkD |MI |http://2f.ru/binkd/ | | maloff@corbina.net | | v0.94 on Jul 24th 2000 FIDO-Deluxe IP |MPUI |http://www.fido-deluxe.de.vu 2:2432/280 Michael Haase | | m.haase@gmx.net | | v2.4 on Sep 26th 2003 Fidonet to Internet: |MI |http://www.terminate.com Bo Bendtsen | | sales@terminate.com | | v2.00 on Mar 23rd 1997 FrontDoor, FD/APX: |MTPC |http://www.defsol.se 2:201/330 Definite Solutions | | sales@defsol.se 1:1/101 | | v2.26SW & v2.33ml FD, v1.15 APX Husky Project |MTPUI|http://sf.net/projects/husky/ | | v1.4 RC2 on Sep 22nd 2003 InterMail, InterEcho |MT |http://www.ifido.com 1:1/133 | | bob@nwstar.com | | v2.50 IM, v1.19 IE Radius (based on |M |http://radius.pp.ru 2:5012/38 Argus) | | fido5012@zaural.net Tel: 7-3522-469463 | | v4.009 on Jan 2nd 2003 Terminate |MBP |http://www.terminate.com | | v5.00 on Aug 7th 1997 Tmail |MI |http://www.tmail.spb.ru v2608 WildCat! If you could type it on your keyboard, it's probably quite OK. No line may be longer than 70 characters. b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index, the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you may want to add some other address where you can be reached for personal comments. c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC. Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file extension of the correct subject on the file name if known.. Ideas for Subject areas: Subject File | Subject File ----------------------------------|---------------------------------- From the *C's *.css | Rebuttals to articles *.reb Fidonet Regional News *.reg | Fidonet Net News *.net Retractions *.rtx | General Fidonet Articles *.art Guest Editorial *.gue | Fidonet Current Events *.cur Fidonet Interviews *.inv | Fidonet Software Reviews *.rev Fidonet Web Page Reviews *.web | Fidonet Notices *.not Getting Fidonet Technical *.ftc | Question Of The Week *.que Humor in a Fido Vein *.hfv | Comix in ASCII *.cmx Fidonet's Int. Put a .TXT on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews. If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I can not fix and I need your help on it. FIDONEWS 21-21 Page 22 24 May 2004 Send articles via e-mail or netmail, file attach or message to: Bj”rn Felten Fidonet 2:2/2 E-Mail bfelten @ telia dot com IMPORTANT! If you send the article via e-mail, make sure you put the word "fidonews" somewhere in the subject line! That way it will always pass the spam filter, ending up in the proper folder. Please include a message, telling me that you have sent an article. That way I will know to look for it. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 21-21 Page 23 24 May 2004 Credits, Legal Infomation, Availability + -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- FIDONEWS STAFF - -- -- -- -- -- -- -- + | | | Editor: Bj”rn Felten, 2:2/2 | | Crash mail attached: Editor@2:2/2 | | E-Mail attached: bfelten @ telia dot com | | Webmaster: Jim Barchuk, jb@fidonews.org | | Columnist: Frank Vest - Frank's Column | | | + -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- + + -- -- -- -- -- -- -- - EDITORS EMERITI - -- -- -- -- -- -- -- + | | | Tom Jennings, Thom Henderson, Dale Lovell, Vince | | Perriello, Tim Pozar, Sylvia Maxwell, Donald Tees, | | Christopher Baker, Zorch Frezberg, Henk Wolsink, | | Doug Meyers, Warren D.
