We are a shipping company with ships, captains and pilots, but without passengers or cargo. We keep the ships going because we like running ships, but it serves no real purpose any more, other than our own personal satisfaction. Thinking that we can ever do more than museum trips is day dreaming. By: Michiel van der Vlist On: Thu 27 May 2004 13.40 ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 21-22 Page 2 31 May 2004 ================================================================= EDITORIAL ================================================================= This week we have something as unique as a Food for Thoughts entry from our own network (i.e. fidonet, of course). It's so on spot, I even contemplate letting it become what that old Gandhi quote about the Western civilization was some years ago, a permanent part of the Snooze. Nah... Not really... That would once again cause too many accusations of your's truly being biased, and that I want to avoid at any cost. So, where are we really letting this shipping company go, then? Well, to this observer it's obvious that those that are supposed to be the ultimate interpreters of our policy is no longer acting with the best of the company as their leading star. A handful of people are constantly pushing the myth that our policy is so outdated, that the only good use of it would be to print it on paper and use it in our "outhouses". But who are we, to disavow the thoughts of our founding fathers like that? We may frown upon the fact that they could not foresee the technology that we now, almost 20 years later, have. But claiming that Policy 4 is a piece of outdated crap is as valid as claiming that the US Constitution is a piece of outdated crap. Only we have better than a 1:10 ratio in our (fidonet's) time favour here. To pick up on the shipping analogy, it seems some people on the bridge of our ship are so fascinated with the new navigational technology, such as satellite navigation, they forgot one important rule on any ship's bridge: "Always do manual navigation parallel to the modern one, as a backup when the technology fails!" And the technology *will* fail. It's not a question of if, it's a question of when, as every good captain knows. The sad thing is, that when the rest of the crew, and even many of the passengers, point out that the ship is going in the wrong direction, the people on the bridge dismiss them with a smirk remark like "You don't understand this, we are the only ones that do!" Let's take a look at some parts of the "outdated piece of crap". In fact, lets start with the very first sentence (all initial disclaimers removed): > This document establishes the policy for sysops who are members > of the FidoNet organization of electronic bulletin board systems. Now, how can anyone not understand that fidonet is a BBS network, with the sole purpose to connect all BBSs around the world into one, big, virtual BBS? Obviously the politicians in our network can, or else they would not allow single-user entries into the nodelist. Next let's take a short stop by the following: > Zone Mail Hour (ZMH) is a defined time during which all nodes in a > zone are required to be able to accept netmail. FIDONEWS 21-22 Page 3 31 May 2004 We now have a ZCC ruling that this is no longer required. You are allowed to select from whom you will accept netmail, no matter what the nodelist entry says. "Hey, you idiot, this is *my* system, and I am entitled to do whatever I please with it!" That's the message our highest authority has sent to all of us, whether we've agreed upon the policy, that used to be a requisite to connect to this network, or not. To be honest, policy actually *does* say something along that line, but it has a very big exception written into it: > As the sysop of an individual node, you can generally do as you > please, as long as you observe mail events ... but it seems to handle exactly the same case, so I guess it's equally revoked by the ZCC ruling. On my BBS, those users that have donated a small amount of money into their crashmail account, can send crashmail to any other user on a different BBS, and the BBS software will calculate the cost for that call and deduct the proper amount of money from their account (usually a very small amount nowadays, by the way). Now, if a user wants to send a crashmail to a user on another BBS, where the sysop don't like the sysop on my BBS (i.e. me) and therefore has passworded my system out, what then? Well, those that do not run a BBS have of course never contemplated this possibility, which once again proves, that if you ignore the very first sentence of our policy, you are bound to navigate totally wrong. And then, as we go along Policy 4, we obviously cannot sidestep the classic: > In order to understand the meaning of "excessively annoying", it is > incumbent upon all sysops to occasionally re-read FidoNet policy. Just saying, that "I think this pee4 is a piece of crap, and I will certainly *not* read it", does not give anyone, wanting to stay connected to our big, virtual BBS, the right to just dismiss it. Once upon a time you *did* agree to follow the policy. Noone forced you to connect your system to the fidonet, you *did* agree to follow our policy voluntarily. If now you've come to the conclusion that you no longer want to follow it, it's as easy as 1, 2, 3: just disconnect and you no longer have to follow our crappy policy! Now, I could go on forever with this. But I think it will soon become very boring, so I will refrain from that. All I'm asking is, that those of you still thinking, that running this old, outdated shipping company is a fascinating adventure, please make sure that your voices are heard. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 21-22 Page 4 31 May 2004 ================================================================= EDITOR'S CORNER ================================================================= Spam, spam, spam -- suddenly it's fun I don't know about you, dear reader, but at least I think that spam is enough related to fidonet to make it a proper topic in the Snooze. If you disagree, feel welcome to send a Letter To The Editor, speaking your mind. Anyway, I found this fantastic tool on the internet, called Abuse! And the fact that a co-author seems to be Joe Jared (can this maybe be "our" Joe Jared?) doesn't make it less fascinating. :) It takes some effort to configure Abuse! if you want to take full advantage of it, but once you're done it's very impressive. Watching it analyze a spam e-mail is really interesting, especially if you enable all the different details it can report. It can even distinguish between direct spam and hi-jacked computers (open pryxy/relay) and send different reports (totally configurable, of course) to the appropriate e-mail address(es). Tell you what, nowadays I'm almost looking forward to finding spam in my inbound, just to have the pleasure of watching Abuse! do it's thing. The program, that is completely free, can be downloaded from: http://spam-abuse.sourceforge.net If many enough people would use this tool, I bet we could soon put an end to the spam plague. Unfortunately, for those that don't use Outlook Express, it's probably a wee bit awkward to use, but it *is* possible even if it takes some cut&paste. Something that you don't have to worry about from OE, all you have to do is drag the spam into the working pane of Abuse! and hit the Analyze button. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 21-22 Page 5 31 May 2004 ================================================================= HUMOUR IN A FIDO VEIN ================================================================= If life was like a computer If you messed up your life, you could press "Ctrl-Alt-Delete" and start all over. To get your daily exercise, just click on "Run". If you need a break from life, click on "Suspend". Hit "Any key" to continue life when ready. To get even with the neighbors, turn up the sound blaster volume. If life gets too noisy, turn off the speakers. To add/remove someone in your life, click Settings -> Control panel. To improve your appearance, just adjust the display settings. When you loose your car keys, click on "Find". "Help" with the chores is just a click away. Auto insurance wouldn't be necessary. Instead, you would use your diskette to recover from a crash. Click "Send now" and a Pizza would be on it's way. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 21-22 Page 6 31 May 2004 ================================================================= BEN RITCHEY'S FIDONET SOFTWARE LISTING ================================================================= -=:{ FIDONet Software Reference }:=- Type: M=Mailer T=Tosser B=BBS D=Door C=Comm/Terminal P=Points E=Editor I=Internet U=Utility ?=Info .- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -. |Software: Author |Type |URL, Contact, Ver, Notes Help Node| `- - - - - - - - - - -+- - -+- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -' Argus |M |http://www.ritlabs.com/argus/ 2:469/84 | | argus@ritlabs.com Tel: 373-2-246889 | | v3.210 on Mar 20th 2001 BeeMail: |M |http://beemail.gexonline.net 1:105/10 Stephen Proffit | | beemail@gexonline.net BinkleyTerm XE |M |http://btxe.sourceforge.net 1:1/102 | | v2.60XE/Gamma-6 on Nov 11th 1998 BinkD |MI |http://2f.ru/binkd/ | | maloff@corbina.net | | v0.94 on Jul 24th 2000 FIDO-Deluxe IP |MPUI |http://www.fido-deluxe.de.vu 2:2432/280 Michael Haase | | m.haase@gmx.net | | v2.4 on Sep 26th 2003 Fidonet to Internet: |MI |http://www.terminate.com Bo Bendtsen | | sales@terminate.com | | v2.00 on Mar 23rd 1997 FrontDoor, FD/APX: |MTPC |http://www.defsol.se 2:201/330 Definite Solutions | | sales@defsol.se 1:1/101 | | v2.26SW & v2.33ml FD, v1.15 APX Husky Project |MTPUI|http://sf.net/projects/husky/ | | v1.4 RC2 on Sep 22nd 2003 Radius (based on |M |http://radius.pp.ru 2:5012/38 Argus) | | fido5012@zaural.net Tel: 7-3522-469463 | | v4.009 on Jan 2nd 2003 Terminate |MBP |http://www.terminate.com | | v5.00 on Aug 7th 1997 Tmail |MI |http://www.tmail.spb.ru v2608 WildCat! If you could type it on your keyboard, it's probably quite OK. No line may be longer than 70 characters. b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index, the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you may want to add some other address where you can be reached for personal comments. c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC. Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration file for the making of the Fidonews. If your submission is too far out of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your article is not accepted.
