I'm talking about the Fidonet Software List keeper, Ben Ritchey. I think I speak for most of our readers, when I say: Thank you Ben for a job well done! Fortunately to all our readers, Robert Couture stepped forward and offered to take over the list. Robert says that he will immediately start checking out if there's any broken links or dead ends, that may have been missed the last couple of weeks, when Ben struggled with his bad eyesight, and Robert also asks all of you, that have any news to report, to do so. Contact info can be found at the end of the new list. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 21-41 Page 3 11 Oct 2004 ================================================================= EDITORIAL ================================================================= Good news and bad news This week, this editor has been blessed with a lot of news, both good and bad. First some bad news from Ben "Software List" Ritchey: ===================================================================== BEN RITCHEY'S FIDONET SOFTWARE LISTING I have found that I can no longer spend as much time working on the computer that I would like to (due to a worsening handicap) so I must regretfully ask that you find/pick another volunteer to maintain same. My system is on auto-pilot so until I hear from you the weekly submissions will continue. ===================================================================== But, soon after that, some good news, from Robert Couture: ===================================================================== Hello ... As a follow up to your Ping, I would like to get a discussion started on getting this listing started with me. ===================================================================== And there we go. Robert now maintains the software list, so all of you, that are concerned about having your fido-related software listed in the Snooze, please contact Robert to make sure you have the latest data listed in the Snooze! We also have more, good news, regarding the old internet links list, that Shannon used to maintain. Thom LaCosta has promised (well, at least almost :) to write a little something on how to get listed in one of the Fidonet related web-rings available. If one of those rings (I honestly have no idea if anyone is "in majority" or not) would appear to be the preferred one, I'd love to have information on how to join, listed in the Snooze, on a permanent basis, but future will tell what happens with this great idea of Thom's. For the column "In the Snooze Ten Years Ago" this week, I've chosen the editorial. What a lovely twist on that same old problem, that we still seem to encounter today, occasionally. And no, I'm not talking about the first part, that about back issues... Finally, I got a letter forwarded from one of our political echoes. Normally, as I hope everyone have noticed, I try to stay out of politics as far as the Snooze is concerned, but this one, I think, is above any US (r) vs. (d) bias, so I hope you all can take it for what I took it for: a huge giggle. Since I never got a reply from the original author, I've taken the FIDONEWS 21-41 Page 4 11 Oct 2004 liberty to edit it a bit, to make it fit better into our e-zine. Thanks Dan, for the contribution! It seems POL_INC is the place to go, if you really want to have fun, discussing politics, right? ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 21-41 Page 5 11 Oct 2004 ================================================================= FIDONET NET NEWS ================================================================= -=: Fido On The Web is Here! :=- Jon Watson, 1:134/703 The HeatSink BBS telnet://theheatsinkbbs.ca http://www.theheatsinkbbs.ca It's been done, you say? I say not. I think that no matter who we are, we can all agree that the decline of Fidonet in North American is largely due to the fact that the computer user base, while growing, has a raplidly deteriorating skillset. Deteriorating to the point that most users would probably consider a "right-click" an advanced "hacker" move. Attempting to coerce these individuals into something like telnet or dial-up BBS'ing is..well...like trying to get your dog to do your calculus homework. Your dog has no frame of reference. I have been a Fido sysop twice. Once back in the 1993-1995 and now since June of this year. In my former Sysop-ness I left because the cost of the extra phone line was killing me (yes, I was poor as most of us were/are), and 8-line behemoths like Nulceus, Octapode, and Chatline were too hard to compete with. Now that telnet is a viable alternative to dial-up (for some) and I'm not as poor as I used to be, I'm back running a Linux telnet-only node and loving it! I've spent the intervening years becoming educated and experience in the computer field. I'm an excellent systems integrator - getting things to play nice together is my forte - and I want to try to integrate two wonderful things in an effort to help revitalize Fidonet: The WWW and Fidonet. It seems to me that any attempt to bring new users into Fidonet will fail if we try to make these users use terminal software. Large black screens scare the hell out of your average computer user these days. In the same vein, the attempt will not be completely successful if we try to get these users to use a web interface that doesn't bear some resemblance to what they're used to using. I think the best formula for success is to provide the user with a web forum interface that resembles what they are used to using on other forum websites. There's never been any question about content - Fido's content has always been vibrant, plentiful, informative, and sometimes humourous. It's all about the interface. To that end, I've taken normal, standard web forum software from Simple Machines (which bears a distinct resemblance to PHPBB, PHPNUKE, and pretty much any other mainstream web forum software out there) and integrated Internet Rex, MBSE BBS, and my own custom PHP scripts to build a system that replicates my BBS echoes onto the web forums. The forums are available on the web (duh) and provide read and write access to Fidonet. Users that prefer the BBS can telnet in and use the messaging echoes that way, and users that prefer the web can use their browser to use the echoes that way. In fact, neither type of FIDONEWS 21-41 Page 6 11 Oct 2004 user even needs to be aware that the other interface exists. Messages are replicated between the BBS and the Web every 15 minutes, and the BBS software takes care of gating messages out to my uplinks as per normal. Informally I've called the system Fido On The Web (FOTW) for now and as of the 9th of October, it's running live. I currently have 10 echoes online and admittedly they are mostly about Internet BBS'ing but that's sufficient for the testing phase. I'm currently inviting Fidonet users to check out the system and provide feedback. I'm really, really inviting those users who like the idea to make use of the PayPal Donate button on the menu to help me collect the cash required to upgrade my IREX to the 1000 node license :) Either way, I'm not going anywhere - I like reading my Fido On The Web! - Jon Watson SysOp The HeatSink BBS http://theheatsinkbbs.ca telnet://theheatsinkbbs.ca ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 21-41 Page 7 11 Oct 2004 ================================================================= FIDONET SOFTWARE REVIEWS ================================================================= Robert Chambers Software By Frank Vest 1:124/6308.1 For those interested, "http://www.premier.net/~chambers/index.htm" offers the following BBS doors: BBS Checkers BBS*Tris Beat the House Brain Drain MultiSearch Text Door Rat Race Artillery I recently had the pleasure of dealing with Robert Chambers when registering his doors. I had stumbled across his "MultiSearch" door while trying to find a door to display and search text files for my users... kind of like a "library" or "reading room". What I had found up that point were programs that required registration but had no method to contact the author to register. A short search later, I located his web site. Being ever cautious about knowing where a payment is going, and having experienced problems with abandoned software, email addresses and such, I sent Robert an e-mail to verify that he was still accepting registrations and that the address was still good. To my surprise, I got a return message telling me that he was still there. After that quick exchange, life got busy and it was a month or two when I finally got back to thinking about the Multisearch door. I also thought about the other doors and downloaded them for testing. The BBS Tetris door was interesting since it actually displayed the pieces falling and the user can turn the pieces in real time. Stuff like this is rare in ansi door graphics. To make a long story short, I sent another email to verify that Robert was still there and where to send the registration. I received a polite reply and mailed my check in to register all the doors. Robert was prompt in sending my registration keys and helpful in explaining how to use them. All in all, a very nice experience. In this day of decline in BBS related software, it is nice to see shareware still supported by the author. Robert also offers the following non-BBS software: ZipTrac Version 1.5 BinBuddy Version 1.2 DrivePal Version 1.2 FIDONEWS 21-41 Page 8 11 Oct 2004 Folder Alarm Version 1.0 ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 21-41 Page 9 11 Oct 2004 ================================================================= ANDY'S ANECDOTES ================================================================= This submission is a news story from the BBC. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3721262.stm US seeks to fine spyware makers Close-up of PC hard drive, Eyewire Spyware can smuggle its way on to your PC. The makers of programs that secretly spy on what people do with their home computer could soon face hefty fines. US legislators have overwhelmingly backed a proposal to impose penalties on the creators of so-called "spyware". These programs gather information about browsing habits, passwords and credit card details and some even turn home computers into spam relays. Later this month a second spyware bill is being debated that criminalises secret spyware installations. Jail sentence The US Securely Protect Yourself Against Cyber Trespass Act (aka Spy Act) was passed 399-1 in the House of Representatives. The dissenting voter was Representative Ron Paul from Texas who believes the government should not police the net. The Spy Act aims to impose civil penalties when spyware is smuggled on to a PC without an owner's knowledge or consent. Those found guilty could face a fine of up to $3m. The measure demands that any maker of a spyware program gets permission from a user to install itself and gets their agreement about what kinds of information can be collected. However, it does nothing to tackle spy programs that watch the keys being press and steal personal information because existing US laws already criminalise this behaviour. US Capitol building, BBC US politicians have three chances to show how they feel about spyware Spying software exempt from the provisions in the Spy Act include programs used by the FBI and other law enforcement organisations to gather data on suspects. There are another two anti-spyware bills making their way through the US legislative system. FIDONEWS 21-41 Page 10 11 Oct 2004 The Internet Spyware Prevention Act (aka I Spy Act), proposes jail sentences for those who hide installations of spyware and the gather personal information without permission. House members are expected to try to combine the two bills into one later this month to avoid a lengthy debate later in the year that could delay the adoption of anti-spyware laws. Also pending is the Software Principles Yielding Better Levels of Consumer Knowledge Act (aka Spy Block Act) is backed by the Senate and also outlaws the surreptitious installation of software to spy on computer users. There is no date set for a vote on this bill. Critics said these bills would make little difference to the amount of spyware in circulation and cited the US Can-Spam Act which has, so far, done little to curb the amount of junk mail people are being sent. A survey by US net provider Earthlink has found that, on average, a net-connected PC is home to 26 spyware programs. To gather its raw data, Earthlink scanned more than three million machines over the last nine months and found more than 83 million spyware programs during its trawl. Computers infested with spyware can run slowly and erratically and bombard users with unwanted adverts. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 21-41 Page 11 11 Oct 2004 ================================================================= CLEAN HUMOUR & JOKES ================================================================= Lehrer Stacks Deck Against Bush NOW IF THE DEBATE WAS HONEST: LEHRER: "You said there was a miscalculation in Iraq," Lehrer asked the president. "What was it and how did it happen?" BUSH: How the hell would I know? With Chaney's lies and the CIA being hopelessly incompetent, how do you expect a guy like me to know how we got into this mess? LEHRER: "What colossal misjudgments, in your opinion," Lehrer asked Kerry, "has President Bush made in these areas [Iraq]?" BUSH: Whew. Where to begin... Oh, you want Kerry to answer? KERRY: Not anticipating the looting, the insurgents, not having intelligence worth a pound of coon-shit, disbanding most of the Iraqi army... Not having a frigging clue concerning Islam, other than that U.S. General, in uniform, saying "Our God is bigger than your god" and declaring a holy war against Islam... Believing that you are God-led... The inability, for political reasons, to admit, much less correct, mistakes made... The Abugrabe(sp) prison scandal... and trying to blame it on a couple o' enlisted men... Denying the corruption and fraud, committed by Halliburton, giving them UN tendered contracts... BUSH: May I interject? KERRY: Why, of course. BUSH: I just realized that all you say is true. I give up. I'm not going to run. KERRY: Wait a minute! _I_ just decided that _I_ don't want the job. It's going to be a pack of troubles and I've married into a billion dollars! Why would I need this? NADER: (Coming on stage): Hey! I'LL take the job! ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 21-41 Page 12 11 Oct 2004 ================================================================= IN THE SNOOZE TEN YEARS AGO ================================================================= Thank you to Darr Hoag of 1:2330/4, Jergen Smulders of 2:281/201, Jim Roberts of 1:266/25, and John Souvestre of 1:396/1 ... all four of whom wrote to us notes that their BBS's have all the back issues of the Snooze. Thanks to John, 1:1/23 now also has a complete collection. The last two articles of this issue have the same title. Actually, it should have been the last three, but I concatonated two to get them into the right order. It is one of those huge missives that are basically twenty netmail messages quoting everything from the NC of Butt-fuck Idaho to the president of ford motors and whining for ten pages that nobody ever reads. The essence of the article is the same as most of them. Somebody annoyed someone, the someone whips out everything they can find called policy, and starts reading fine print. Finally they find a paragraph they can use, and issue a *POLICY COMPLAINT*. This one basically *demands* that a moderator be removed because (get this), he claims his LD on his income tax. Yes indeed. That is comercial use, doncha know? It is no secret that I am not a great lover of the law clerk types that go to bed each night clutching their copies of policy to their breasts while they dream dreams of Parry Mason of The Net. But this is getting ridiculous, damnit. The *C positions were created because we need basic work done (remember the nodelist?). We have turned them into positions that only an idiot would touch ... a position that has to spend hours and hours dealing with snivelers who want to be polititions. Now we need Echopol as well? ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 21-41 Page 13 11 Oct 2004 ================================================================= ROBERT COUTURE'S FIDONET SOFTWARE LISTING ================================================================= -=:{ FIDONet Software Reference }:=- Type: M=Mailer T=Tosser B=BBS D=Door C=Comm/Terminal P=Points E=Editor I=Internet U=Utility ?=Info .- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -. |Software: Author |Type |URL, Contact, Ver, Notes Help Node| `- - - - - - - - - - -+- - -+- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -' Argus |M |http://www.ritlabs.com/argus/ 2:469/84 | | argus@ritlabs.com Tel: 373-2-246889 | | v3.210 on Mar 20th 2001 BeeMail: |M |http://beemail.gexonline.net 1:105/10 Stephen Proffit | | beemail@gexonline.net BinkleyTerm XE |M |http://btxe.sourceforge.net 1:1/102 | | v2.60XE/Gamma-6 on Nov 11th 1998 BinkD |MI |http://2f.ru/binkd/ | | maloff@corbina.net | | v0.94 on Jul 24th 2000 FIDO-Deluxe IP |MPUI |http://www.fido-deluxe.de.vu 2:2432/280 Michael Haase | | m.haase@gmx.net | | v2.4 on Sep 26th 2003 Fidonet to Internet: |MI |http://www.terminate.com Bo Bendtsen | | sales@terminate.com | | v2.00 on Mar 23rd 1997 FrontDoor, FD/APX: |MTPC |http://www.defsol.se 2:201/330 Definite Solutions | | sales@defsol.se 1:1/101 | | v2.26SW & v2.33ml FD, v1.15 APX Husky Project |MTPUI|http://sf.net/projects/husky/ | | v1.4 RC2 on Sep 22nd 2003 Radius |M |http://radius.pp.ru 2:5012/38 (based on Argus) | | fido5012@zaural.net Tel: 7-3522-469463 | | v4.009 on Jan 2nd 2003 Terminate |MBP |http://www.terminate.com | | v5.00 on Aug 7th 1997 Tmail |MI |http://www.tmail.spb.ru v2608 WildCat! If you could type it on your keyboard, it's probably quite OK. No line may be longer than 70 characters. b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index, the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you may want to add some other address where you can be reached for personal comments. c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC. Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file extension of the correct subject on the file name if known.. Ideas for Subject areas: Subject File | Subject File ----------------------------------|---------------------------------- From the *C's *.css | Rebuttals to articles *.reb Fidonet Regional News *.reg | Fidonet Net News *.net Retractions *.rtx | General Fidonet Articles *.art Guest Editorial *.gue | Fidonet Current Events *.cur Fidonet Interviews *.inv | Fidonet Software Reviews *.rev Fidonet Web Page Reviews *.web | Fidonet Notices *.not Getting Fidonet Technical *.ftc | Question Of The Week *.que Humor in a Fido Vein *.hfv | Comix in ASCII *.cmx Fidonet's Int. Put a .TXT on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews. If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I can not fix and I need your help on it. FIDONEWS 21-41 Page 21 11 Oct 2004 Send articles via e-mail or netmail, file attach or message to: Bj”rn Felten Fidonet 2:2/2 E-Mail bfelten @ telia dot com IMPORTANT! If you send the article via e-mail, make sure you put the word "fidonews" somewhere in the subject line! That way it will always pass the spam filter, ending up in the proper folder. Please include a message, telling me that you have sent an article. That way I will know to look for it. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 21-41 Page 22 11 Oct 2004 Credits, Legal Infomation, Availability + -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- FIDONEWS STAFF - -- -- -- -- -- -- -- + | | | Editor: Bj”rn Felten, 2:2/2 | | Crash mail attached: Editor@2:2/2 | | E-Mail attached: bfelten @ telia dot com | | Webmaster: Jim Barchuk, jb@fidonews.org | | Columnist: Frank Vest - Frank's Column | | | + -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- + + -- -- -- -- -- -- -- - EDITORS EMERITI - -- -- -- -- -- -- -- + | | | Tom Jennings, Thom Henderson, Dale Lovell, Vince | | Perriello, Tim Pozar, Sylvia Maxwell, Donald Tees, | | Christopher Baker, Zorch Frezberg, Henk Wolsink, | | Doug Meyers, Warren D.
