I was nailed by some kind of nasty malware that has knocked out my
machine for over two weeks. Now I've been computing since 1986 and never
ever had a virus or any other similar problem before: I use a pop up
killer, Spybot, a virus scanner and Zone Alarm, but something snuck
through anyway and opened up a back door that allowed several viri and
dialer programs to download. My first clue was when a dozen new programs
tried to access the net one morning and Zone Alarm popped up. I said
"no" to all and started to wipe them out. Spybot killed a few, F-Prot
got a few more but others could not be deleted under Windows as they
were using Windows files to operate with. So I dropped down into DOS and
deleted them all. For good measure I also deleted any related tmp, dat
and dll files with the same date stamp on them. Unfortunately at least a
few of these were legitimate Windows files but with altered date stamps
on them. By the time I was done Explorer and Outlook wouldn't work.

Now because I have a sleazy Compaq, I don't have restore disks. So I had
to take the machine downtown to a shop to re-install Windows, Explorer
and Outlook, and finish the virus cleaning.

No, unfortunately. Everything is hand butchered by the hunter, so
quality varies.

And without passing through a federally inspected abattoir, wild meat
cannot be legally exported outside the NWT, even within Canada, thereby
stifling what could be a profitable little industry for Natives wanting
to maintain a more traditional lifestyle.

It's readily available here albeit on a vary informal chain of supply
and subject to the points made above.

 SH As for prices, you guys seem to be ready to pay more than we do or
 SH you're forced to.

I am prepared to pay L'heritage prices as the quality is there.

 SH When I stopped in at the liquor store, I was
 SH appalled at some of the markups -- $33 for a bottle of rum we consider
 SH expensive at $23.

Ah, that's another matter. The NWT and Nunavut have the highest "sin"
taxes in Canada. I always stock up on both alcohol and tobacco when in
Alberta.
