The rank of an XO in 'numbers' will vary with the size of the ship, but they
are the 2nd most senior one on the ship and act as CO when the CO is not
there.

My current XO is an O6 (wears the birds on his collar) just like my CO is, but
is junior in when he made O6 to my CO.

Yes, USA TV shows will say 'drug store'. I imagine our USA twist is a little
wierd to you. We used to use an older term in the USA. Apothocary. I am not
sure when it changed to 'drug store' but it was a long time ago, over 100
years at least. I'm pretty sure USA didnt use 'chemist' at all.

On the flightless bird, was there a bird named something like Goa? Started
with a G. BIG thing, been extinct about 800 years now. The first 'Kiwi's
wiped them out before europeans discovered OZ. It could be there was another
big bird there that was also wiped out by man. It was both over-hunted and
the environment changed with man's farming techniques so messed up their
habitat.

For today's happenings for me, I took Charlotte to the Tonoo Market for
shopping. We walk and it is about 1.5 miles. To get there, you walk through
the Ginza (our local name for our open air covered mall, not the same as the
famous Tokyo Ginza but we like it).

We should have headed out earlier because we got there at about 1:30pm and
things start closing up then. Japanese traditionally shop for food in the
morning for that day's meal. The markets open at 5am and by 1pm some are
closing or have sold much of their stock for the day. Yes, they have 'grocery
stores' (Food store, supermarket, your version would be a Walmart) but
normally they arent so very big. Most real shopping in Sasebo is at the Tonoo
Market. It's where yuou can get the best fresh produce and seafoods.

Tonoo Market is a long thin street, maybe a mile long if you account for the
side streets. As Japanese eat 'seasonally' (meaning the diet varies widely
with the seasons and what is fresh just then), the items for sale vary with
the season. Gobo (burdock root) is not sold now as it's the wrong season for
the roots to be ready. New potatoes of several types are flourishing and so
are grapes.

I'll be cooking up a storm of foods later. I mostly got vegetables and fruits
as we were totally out of all fresh stuff.
                                       xxcarol
