Maybe unusual, but not necessarily _highly_ unusual.  I have at least two 
stories, although they're a bit more dated than yours.  Someone I knew in 
high school quit Emory because he was apparently taking a lot of flak about 
being Jewish.  That was the 80s.  In the late 60s or early 70s, family 
friends who were also IBMers (like us) had moved down to the Atlanta area, 
and when a family member elsewhere in the country had a baby, the wife went 
out to buy a gift.  She was in a baby store looking at jewelry and asked if 
they had a small Star of David necklace.  The clerk turned her back on the 
woman and asked her to leave the store.  Yeah, I know it was 35-40 years ago, 
but people who were alive _then_ are still alive _now_, and attitudes like 
that don't change easily.  I've personally been on the receiving end of some 
odd comments, but not specifically from anyone south of the Mason-Dixon line.
