Lost in Space is Sci-fi.
2001 is SF.

I'll stand on the shoulders of giants and post a chart from Gharlane
that addressed the classes of Speculative Fiction. It springs to life
in a box with a nice fixed width font.

+-------------- Gharlane's handy dandy spec-fic chart -----------+

This is worth reading.

Gharlane defined SCI-FI as-
>"SCI-FI" is Fantasy that lifts props from Science Fiction without laying=
the groundwork or establishing the need for technology. ( example; Cric=
hton could just as easily be a human transported across the Rainbow Bridg=
e to Asgard, being Earnestly Interviewed by Loki; we haven't seen any use=
of actual technology that can't be handled just as easily with Magic Spe=
lls; he has a Magic Spell to get home with, but it's clouded until the Ri=
ght Time. At least Manning had the class to slip "Froonium" in as *inten=
ded* as guff. )=20

His Definition for SF is two fold
>"Hard Science Fiction" is written by people who know enough of science a=
nd technology to know what is possible, and create a narrative milieu bas=
ed on the availability of something we haven't got yet, but can have.=20
>VERY few people do "Hard Science Fiction" without slipping over the=20
>edge here and there, so the real thing is very rare indeed. =A0On TV,=20
>the only two examples I can think of offhand are "MEN INTO SPACE"=20
>and "STAR COPS."=20
>"Soft Science Fiction" is an exercise in coherent extrapolation; given=20
>one presumption, how would life/society/human beings be affected, and=20
>what would they do about it? =A0Historically, some fairly wild one-=20
>presumption schticks have been allowed, when developed with skill and=20
>respect by the writer involved. =A0( My favorite examples here are=20
>Alfred Bester's two best books, "TIGER, TIGER" and "THE DEMOLISHED=20
>MAN," which aside from a few noncritical props, posit only one=20
>departure from present knowledge, the trainability of ESP powers. )=20
