Oh, I liked Bob, too. Still do. In spite of his problems with keeping his
zipper fastened, he's a fairly cool guy. I'm not sure how he feels about me,
what with the Karen problem, but I'd still party with him.

In 1990, I was at the pre-con party out at Dal Coger's house. Bob and I
hadn't seen each other in years, and we got started yacking about this and
that, catching up on old times. Carrie McGill, one of the other con
staffers, came up bouncing and tried to insert herself in the conversation;
she had no idea who I was talking to.

"Well? Are you gonna introduce me or not?"

"Damn, where are my manners? Sorry, baby. Bob, Carrie, Carrie, Bob."

Bob took her hand and kissed her knuckles. "Charmed."

And we went back to our conversation and ignored her. She flounced off.
After a bit, Bob went off to find the bathroom and I got started talking to
somebody else. And I forgot all about her.

An hour or so later, she came steaming back up and commenced to slap me.
"You asshole! Why didn't you tell me that was Bob Asprin!?!"

"Carrie, I didn't even think about it. I thought everybody knew Bob!"

I never knew Poul and Karen personally. They never made it this far
southeast. But I understand that they had what may have been one of the most
stable marriages in the sf community.

A lot of my friends that I made from my con-bouncing days have died. A lot
of folks I would've liked to meet are gone, too, and I miss them even though
I never knew them.
