Flawed as it was, that treaty would have saved us money, because the
longer we delay, the more expensive the inevitable remedies. A coal
fired power plant, forex, is assumed to last for 50 years.
Decommission it before then, or convert it to non-polluting technology
if that proves possible, and you've upped the cost per kilowatt hour
significantly.

To put it in perspective, I read the other day that we're building or
planning more than 160 coal-fired plants, most using the old, more
polluting technology. I think it's safe to say that we won't be
running any of them in their original form for their fifty-year
lifespan. We won't be able to. Those who think that we can continue
pouring greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, and allow 2 billion
Indians and Chinese to join us, are seriously deluding themselves.
