sure, there are formal elements (color, composition, balance, line,
form, etc) by which you can 'evaluate' individual works.  and these
can be helpful in understanding the significance of a specific piece,
as well as bodies of work by an artist or group of artists.   doesn't
take more then one semester of art appreciation to get the basics down
(should you be so inclined.)

the notion that art needs to conforms to anything other then an
individuals taste makes no sense to me.  does one need to understand
wine making in order to enjoy a glass of wine? does knowing the
process make it taste any better?  you may now understand why it
tastes the way it taste, but does that alone make you want to drink
it?  if it don't taste good to you, it don't taste good to you.

(shrug) what do i know.  the DADA movement was a while ago.  time for
another Duchamp i think  :^)

shame on them.

....there is a lot of anger at the church right now.  child
molestation is front and center in the media and the courts.  taking
an icon and soaking it in urine brings the lofty ideals of the church
down to the blood and guts level the rest of us live at.
many religions spend a lot of time pretending/denying that the body
even exists (or is more then an evil temptation.)  molestation is very
bodily.  makes sense to me anyway that someone would want to do to it
(the church) what was done to them.

but your probably right in that it's easier hold something in disdain
then to respect it as having value to someone else.
