As I think I pointed out elsewhere, they receive their compensation
the way anyone else would. And part of that compensation can consist
of ownership, which isn't subject to inheritance tax, but is income.

Don't get me wrong -- I'm familiar with the emotional importance of a
family business, having grown up in one. But you have to draw a
distinction between receiving nice, plump ownership as a reward for
being someone's kid -- of my grandfather's land, say -- and receiving
rewards for your hard work just as any employee would.

Another way of looking at it is that if you had two hypothetical kids
and one of them went in to the family business and one of them didn't
and their hypothetical father kicked the bucket, the half that the kid
who didn't work in it inherited wouldn't reflect a contribution to the
company, so ditto for the kid who /did/ work. It's just hereditary
wealth.

Cut spending on what's wasteful and increase spending on what we need
but don't do. The truth, though, is that there isn't all that much
that people would want to cut. We need a military and we need highways
and we need schools, and people want a pension when they retire and
help with their medical bills.

What's more, we've become much richer and taxes haven't gotten any
higher. So what's the problem? Basically that taxes have been reduced
for the rich and increased for everyone else, and that the rich are
far richer now than they were while the poor and middle class haven't
seen a gain. So regular people feel put upon, feel that they're being
taxed to death. And they're right: the after-tax income of the
wealthiest Americans has increased by 210% in the last 30 years or so,
while the after-tax income of everyone else has stayed static or gone
down. The obvious solution here is to spread the wealth a bit by
rolling back the tax cuts for the rich, reducing loopholes, and
increasing Federal income taxes to allow states and localities to
reduce their more regressive ones.

"I love it when I'm around the country club, and I hear people talking about
the debilitating
effects of a welfare society. At the same time, they leave their kids a
lifetime and beyond
of food stamps. Instead of having a welfare officer, they have a trust officer.
And instead
of food stamps, they have stocks and bonds."
