?????  Have you been *reading* this thread?

People are upset because Lucas is going to release a substandard
version of the original trilogy on DVD.  We know this because people
inside Lucasfilm Ltd. and/or Fox have gotten the word out to the DVD
press.

Your theory is what?  It would make sense for people to be upset at
Lucas for releasing an inferior version of the OOT if he publicly
*announced* that he was doing so, but it doesn't make sense to be upset
that he is both planning to do this *and* attempted to hide the fact
from the public?

That isn't a matter of "cleaning up" the original film, since those
boxes never showed up in any theatrical presentation.  Those (and some
SFX color shifts) were purely an artifact of the video transfer
process.  The electronic "eye" in that case saw and recorded matte
boxes that are totally invisible to the human eye looking at a film
print.  So this is a matter of fixing the video transfer (which is part
of what is meant by "remastering") rather than altering the original
film.   That's what was done on the later video versions.

The operative words in that reply being *for the time.*  Yes, LD was
better than VHS.  And DVD is better than LD.  And anamorphic widescreen
DVD is better on a widescreen set than non-anamorphic  DVD.  (For that
matter, anamorphic LD was better than regular LD.  We never saw many of
those in the states, because widescreen TVs were still rare and the
discs looked ridiculous on regular TVs, but I still have "The Fugitive"
on anamorphic LD.  Nothing else in my video collection ever looked as
good on the Toshiba widescreen set I bought in 1996 as that disc until
the anamoprhic DVDs arrived.)

Doing a laserdisc dub *in 2006* is low-quality and unprofessional
because it is not only way behind the state-of-the-art (which is now
hi-def DVD in the form of HD-DVD and, soon, Blu-Ray) it is way behind
the state of the "you can buy it at Wal*Mart" average consumer
electronics, there's one in every home art.  One advantage of
anamorphic widescreen DVDs even for people who don't (yet) own
widescreen TVs is the fact that they have to be created from hi-res D2
or D1 masters - not the lower-res analog and D4 masters used in
laserdisc.  (Contrary to popular misconception, laserdisc did not have
digital *video*.  Many LDs had digital audio tracks, but laser video
was always 100% analog.)  So that means that in most cases a brand-new
digital video master has to be created from the original film elements.
 Just the advances in film-to-video transfer since 1993 would ensure
that the OOT would look better than it ever has before on home video -
without even considering DVD's inherent advantages over LD and VHS, not
to mention how far the technology of compression and disc audio has
progressed since the format debuted in 1997.  We could have had a truly
archival edition of the films as they first appeared in the theaters
and Lucas has decided that no such thing should exist.

*That's* why people are so upset.
