Replying to myself...

Of course, in the course of packing (we are in the process of buying a
house/selling a house/moving), I came across the letter tonight.

It was written in March 1990, and apparently my mother and the
Ellisons were in a correspondence regarding the freezing of the Thames
River during the early 1800's (the setting for Elizabeth Mansfield's
[my mother's nom-de-plume] "The Frost Fair"). Mrs. Ellison apparently
declared that the Thames had never frozen over, and Harlan reported
that in one of his reviews (for some reason) and my mom wrote to him
to correct their conceptions.

It was a very nice letter (hand typed, of course, because this was in
the days before email for the masses).
