There was never an official release of any of the original gag reels.

1)  Warner Bros. would have to have paid big bucks to use the music
featured in the originals

2)  Each actor had a veto on the use of his/her scenes, and some people
don't like looking silly or being caught on camera swearing or making
dirty jokes. <g>  So the odds were anything we got was going to be
edited in one way or another.  Also I'm not sure if the outtakes are
considered part of the original work product the actors were already
paid for (or at least a by-product) or if they had to be paid
separately for their use.  Either way that would also have limited how
much material could be used, depending on WB's total budget and what
the actors were asking.

When S1 was mastered WB still had serious doubts about the sales
appeals of the sets, and certainly wasn't going to spend any extra
money on including even and edited version of the gag reel, so I'm sure
that was never even considered.  By the time prep started on S2 the
sales figures on S1 were coming in and WB was willing to put in the
time and effort to cut together such material as the actors approved to
public domain or studio-owned music.  We were lucky to get that much.

I believe the dupe that has been floating around was taken from a PAL
VHS copy of JMS's original tapes, which was then dubbed *back* onto
NTSC by someone who didn't understand the differences between the two
formats, and then digitized from there.   The clips I've seen from it
have that "look" - color bled out, scan lines galore, sound distorted.
Hardly the kind of thing a studio like Warner Bros. would put out and
charge for.
