The issue for Dems was never that Bush ducked the draft and lied about
his service -- both Bush and Clinton did that -- or even that despite
what you say, he committed an illegality (he was AWOL from his final
posting). It was a matter of hypocrisy, of the fact that Clinton was
portrayed as a draft dodger while Bush was portrayed as a patriot, of
the fact that Clinton was opposed to the war while Bush claimed to
support it, of the fact that the many Democrats and handful of
Republicans who /did/ serve, men like Gore, McCain, and Kerry, had
their service denied or smeared.
