"Kill and Kill Again" on DVD. Dreadful and deservedly obscure martial
arts flick. When my nephew was a little boy and I was briefly living
at home after college, he came to stay with us for a week or two while
his parents were out of town. For part of the time he had a really bad
cold and mostly stayed in bed while my parents read him stories or
watched TV with him. My father mostly watched awful movies on cable in
the afternoons. In those days Cinemax used to run the same dozen or so
grade-z HBO rejects over and over again, and my nephew somehow fell in
love with "Kill and Kill Again", insisting the my father watch it with
him every time it was on. (I even got dragged into watching it a
couple of times when it was on in the early evening.) For some reason
this came up in conversation with my nephew and my father a couple of
years ago. My nephew would have been about 25 by then. He didn't have
a DVD player yet, but I did, and one day I stumbled across a copy of
"Kill and Kill Again." The next time we had a guy's movie night at my
house I ran it for him as a surprise. He couldn't believe how bad it
was, because he still remembered it fondly. Needless to say, he didn't
want the disc even after he got a DVD player and it sits in my
collection, gathering dust. <g>

"The Ascent of Man: A Personal View by Jacob Bronowski" It is both
widely available and reasonably priced in the UK, so more folks may own
it on that side of the Pond. Here it is not available through normal
commercial channels but must be hunted down and the price is outrageous
- $150 (on SALE) But I thought it was worth it and am just glad I
didn't pay $250 or $300 when I first discovered it a couple of years
ago.

"Jumanji" Hey, it was 1997 and there weren't a lot of titles available
to show the players off. (Which is why I once owned a copy of
"Demolition Man" <g>) I looked at this not long ago and totally felt
like a dirty old man when I realized that the little girl in the film
was played by Kirstin Dunst. I'll never be able to look at Mary Jane
Watson the same way again. <g>

"The Long Kiss Goodnight" Geena Davis as a CIA assassin with amnesia
who thinks she's a suburban housewife until her memory starts coming
back and people start trying to kill her. Don't ask. Also has Samuel
L. Jackson spouting lines like, "I usually just punch them in the mouth
and sing 'Pop Goes the Weasel'"

"The Last Action Hero" I really have no excuse.

"The Rock: The Criterion Collection" Look, lots of people have this
qunitessential Bay-Bruckheimer schlockfest, but I have the frickin'
"Criterion Collection" 2-disc special ediiton. It's a sickness, I tell
you.

"Midnight Run" uderrated and too-little-seen comedy with Charles
Grodin, Robert De Niro and Yaphet Kotto, Dennis Farina and Joe
Pantoliano. Grodin plays a mob accountant who embezzled millions and
gave most of it to charity, then vanished. De Niro is an ex-cop,
framed for taking bribes, who now works as a bounty hunter. He gets
the job of getting Grodin from New York to California in time to make a
scheduled court appearance - because if he doesn't make it, the bail
bondsman is out of business. Meanwhile FBI Agent Kotto and mobster
Farina (the man Grodin stole from) and another bounty hunter are also
on the trail of Grodin. Think "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" with
guns. <g>

"Practical Magic" charmer that somehow didn't find an audience about
estranged sisters (Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman) who share secrets
and magical powers and also an interest in the same man.

"Running Scared" *Not* the recent film about the botched drug deal and
a hot gun that somebody doesn't dispose of properly. This is s 1986
action comedy with the most unliely team of detectives ever. Billy
Crystal (!) and Gregory Hines (!!) are Chicago cops who start to
serioulsy consider taking early retirement after an arrest goes bad in
this action comedy. Dan Hedaya plays the Irracisble Police Captain
(tm) and Jimmy Smits is the drug lord the pair must take down. It
shouldn't work, but it does. Forget "Analyze That". *This* film
should have had a sequel.

"Streets of Fire" A Rock and Roll Fable. Cult classic starring Michael
Pare, Diane Lane, Amy Madigan, Rick Moranis, Willem DaFoe (possibly in
his first major role) and one of the greatest soundtracks of all time.

"Turbulance" I'm not sure if this one even made it into theaters. Ray
Liotta is totally over-the-top as a seductive Ted Bundy-style serial
killer being transported by across country by U.S. Marshalls on (what
else?) Christmas Eve. (There is a whole odd subculture of violent
action films with Christmas themes. The first two "Die Hards", the
aforementioned "Running Scared", this one, I'm sure I'll think of
others.) Another 1997 release that I'm sure I never would have seen
otherwise. But Laruen Holly is cute as the plucky stewardess who must
inevitably take on Liotta after he's slaughter almost everybody *else*
on the plane.

Regards,

Joe
