reflects on the BBS. What a caller does outside the BBS is THEIR
BUSINESS, but they're a GUEST in my home at logon.

  When dial-up was the big thing, there were at least a dozen other
BBS's in the Little Rock, Arkansas area. Now, I'm the only one left, as
far as I can tell. The internet (telnet BBS's) allows those callers who
aren't local to it to logon as well.

  When I ran GT Power software, and had an unlimited long distance
package to the U.S. and Canada with SBC, I had a special "callback
option" for verified callers, where the system would call them back for
their BBS session...and they just paid maybe 1 or 2 minutes of long
distance.

  In switching to Synchronet earlier this year...since GT unfortunately
wasn't built for telnet via Windows...I combined the Argus frontend and
the dialup-to-telnet program to allow dial-up callers access as well. I
have a few callers who PREFER dial-up to telnet.

  There used to be FIDOnet 3821 (Little Rock), but since I'm the only
node left (it would seem), I joined with Net 382, based in Austin,
Texas.

  Synchronet 3.x for Windows is the only freeware, actively supported,
BBS software that I know of out there now. I ran GT for almost 13 years,
but wanted telnet access, so if I was away from home, I could still get
into the BBS.

  Well, it'd be better to send me a packet message...I'm at
N5VLZ@W5AUU.#CENAR.AR.USA.NOAM -- the W5AUU BBS in Conway, Arkansas.
Most of my ham radio work now, as I told you, is VHF packet.

  I'm just a Technician class licensee (no-code), but depending on what
the FCC does with that NPRM (removing the 5 wpm code), I might be able
to do some HF stuff. However, I don't have any HF gear, and since the
XYL and I live at a complex for the disabled, they frown on outdoor
antennas. That's fine with me, because all the nearby trees have made
great lightning targets of late.
