Ärende: Ham Radio and BBS's
===========================
Hi, Mvan...

ML>Apparently the morse code requirement was changed a year ago. I think there'
ML>a United Nations HAM/Ameteur Radio committee that made that decision.

The Morse Code requirement was enacted by the International
Telecommunications Union (ITU), and any changes were done at the World
Amateur Radio Conference. That decision has now been left up to
individual countries.

ML>Cool. If it was good enough back then, it'll be good enough back now; the go
ML>old days when 300 baud ruled the earth. I'll be using OPUS/Maximus so no
ML>animated prompts and crap like that.

Unfortunately, right now, my packet setup is down. I don't know if
it's a bad cable or what...and I can't afford to get a special packet
data radio right now.

ML>You mean error correcting right ? sort of how TCP/IP works. I don't think
ML>anything spanding long distances can be truely error free.

It uses the term "packet"...as data is sent in "packets". It send a
data comparison packet to the recipient after a packet is sent, to see
if it matches the same data packet from the original sender. If it
matches, the next packet is sent. If not, that packet is resent until it
matches.

ML>Out of curiosity, why do you think people would setup packet radio BBS ? --
ML>just something to do maybe ? ...

Those who do are ham radio operators who want to help with handling
emergency, priority, health and welfare, and routine communications
messages. This can be especially useful with disasters, etc. As I type
this, the state of Florida is preparing to deal with Ernesto, which may
affect much of the peninsula over the upcoming week.

ML>So basically you have the packet radio equipment hooked up to a frontend, li
ML>a BBS frontend mailer which can receive calls and pass the line to the BBS
ML>software. Is that right ?

No, the BBS can be accessed by anyone. But, the packet door...as well
as a ham radio awards door...REQUIRE proof of a valid amateur radio
license before they will be allowed to use those.

Only valid licensed amateur radio operators can access a true packet
BBS. These have mainly ham radio bulletins and files, but no doorgames,
as in the traditional sense of a BBS.

Concerning my system, it features ham radio and weather as its
"themes", but it is not exclusively for that. If you logged onto my BBS,
and after applying for access through the New User Validation procedure,
tried to access the ham radio packet door, you would get an "Access
Denied" message.

This is because the BBS Sysop, who must also be a licensed ham radio
operator to use the packet door on his system, must ensure that
non-licensed hams do not get access to where they may transmit amateur
radio communications. Unlicensed operation can get both the Sysop, and
the non-licensed user, in big trouble with the FCC...where both would
risk heavy monetary fines, and in the case of the ham radio operator,
loss of their license.
