It also works without inetd.  Personally I would prefer to keep binkd seperate
from any other daemon (standalone) but also have the ability to run it as a
backend if the need is there.  For example if a main connected server has nodes
with access to Fido running on a not-so-well connected network things like
stunneling could be applicable as far as 'direct' connection(s) to those nodes
and their binkd's, or whatever, don't require anything special to happen.  The
only thing that would matter is that the external remote would require an
encrypted key to reach those nodes or it wouldn't get by the main server. 
Tunneling also could be employed which wouldn't require encryption for the less
paranoid but the idea is still the same.

I put it through some hoops on purpose.  I like to stress test things.
