Hi Maurice,

PK> transfers (better than 90% as efficient as FTP on my tests using
PK> BinkD 0.9.4, which was quite some time ago now), especially when
PK> considering the Fidonet Specific management overhead involved.

MK> Which ftpd and on what OS?

Jeez this is going back MANY years.......;-)

Prior to 1993 I used BinkleyTerm/2 Scripts and Zmodem (DSZ) transfers to a
local (IE within Auckland) Unix Host that imported Fidonet from Randy Bush,
however that was a simple file transfer function and not strictly to Fidonet
inbound/outbound areas, so it can be ignored.

1993 - 2000 Direct FTP to Randy Bush (until he closed down) for both Echomail
and Filecho. No idea what OS he was using but it was a unix system. My end is
OS/2 and a Rexx FTP Script I wrote that I still use today for Filecho transfers
(see below), however since around 1998 I also did Echomail via BinkD/2. At
least once per month I would have to "massage" things to fix up the FTP errors
of some sort, PRIOR to moving echomail to BinkD.

1997 - today, to Bob Seaborn. I use BinkD/2 in various versions from v0.8.9 up
to the current one I am runing which is 0.9.5 for Echomail and my Rexx FTP
script for Fileecho. No idea what FTPD Bob runs sorry, all my FTP Script says
is -
Login successful, server is UNIX Type: L8.
whatever a "UNIX Type: L8" Server is......;-)

My Rexx FTP script uses the Rexx FTP API and is HEAVILY customised for Fidonet
purposes, in that it searches for all the .TIC's, and compares the .TIC file
AREANAME with my File area definitions in Maximus and only picks up the Files
for the Areas I want, the rest are deleted at source before being sent. As I
moved from Dial-up to ADSL around 2000 I needed to minimise the Dial-up
transfers as much as possible.

For Filecho's, FTP and my script is good enough but even then I find I
occasionally have to patch up something. Thats why I moved to BinkD/2 for
Echomail, it is significantly more reliable and better integrated with Fidonet
Echomail PROCESSING environments than FTP is.

Plus I can do things (such as better error recovery) with Rexx FTP that a
standard FTP client can't do. Thats why FTP is just "ok", PROVIDED you use an
"intelligent" Client, but I still don't consider it good enough for Echomail.

PK> If you really achieved 1/3 the performance then I seriously suggest
PK> you look at your method of measuring that performance, because in
PK> real life those figures indicate a big problem somewhere.

MK> That is what I've been saying for over 10 years now.

Here's a snapshot of my Echomal transer stats using BinkD/2 to Bob Seaborn.

Not exactly large files but none took longer than 3 seconds using BinkD/2. Here
are some Filecho Stats using my Rexx FTP script. You can see 1 reject TIC

You may note that except for ONE transfer, FTP comes nowhere near the
performance of BinkD in those stats, but as thats a different server on a
completely different IP address I have no idea of its loading at that time.

Cheers.............pk.
