Aside from basic sanity checks performed... TCP does a pretty swell job of
ensuring a file was transmitted unless something is really wrong with a system.
 In such cases, I've seen even Fido mailers behave incorrectly and acknowledge
files.  I do not know if Internet Rex of FIFTP ever attempted to perform any
verification but with the clients I coded I would at least compare file sizes
before deleting a file locally or remotely.  Today, the server operator could
go one step further and add a text file that contained a list of MD5 check sums
of all files in a given directory.  Any file downloaded would then be compared
against this list.  I could probaly add this support to my FTPmail script but
with one user who I am trying to get to go to binkd it doesnt seem worth the
effort.

In the case of ftp there is no need for the client to tell the server it
received the file.  After the client has performed some basic checks it
determines when to delete the file.  Don't get me wrong, I perfer binkd over
ftp anyday.  In fact, up until a few years ago I still had a handful of ftp
links that I worked to get converted over to binkp.  The reason for this is not
that ftp did not work reliably but that I just don't like FTP and it required
extra overhead.  Also, there is no way for me to ensure that all clients
adhered to the same standard to ensure things flowed reliably.
