================================
ML> There were a number of restaurants that might have looked
ML> promising on that road but for the fact that they were
 ML> vegetarian places.
GJ> Those too. I went for the cheaper, "workers'" eateries, and recall
GJ> getting a particularly good lamb biryani at one of those. It was

On the side streets (lower rents, no doubt) there were a few
somewhat interesting looking places. On the main drag, I didn't
see those cheaper eating houses, though the really upscale ones
(where you got a glass with your beer or soda) were on Race
Course Road or the cross streets going west from Serangoon.

GJ> while eating that, that I looked across a side street to another small
GJ> restaurant advertising "Lucky Turtle Soup". There seemed to be
 GJ> something wrong there...

Lucky for someone other than the turtle.

GJ> Knowing that you will not do simple maths to relate the cost of the
GJ> booze to the extra money which you pay to travel nobs' class, or even
GJ> Untied vs SW cattle truck.

I just did some random (that is truly random) checking, and
I discovered that for cities served by Southwest, if one wished
to fly United, with a month notice, the average price differential
was about 20 percent. If one picked and chose alternative airlines,
the average price differential was 22 percent. This differential
owed to consistently higher prices on the part of Southwest. WN
has managed to position itself in such a way that there is a
certain (read stupid) clientele that goes straight to WN to book
instead of comparison shopping. And it's clever in that it excludes
itself from the comparison shopping engines. And it has this amazing
marketing slogan "Ding, you are now able to move about the country,"
ignoring the fact that it uses airports that are far away from the
market cities (these airports are less used, which contributes to
on-time statistics, plus they charge lower fees to the airline,
which is good for the airline bottom line; but the disadvantage of
being at Islip instead of LaGuardia or Burbank as opposed to Los
Angeles is quite considerable). Plus its route network is absurdly
constricted and favors small boring cities over interesting larger
ones. Now for me, flying Nob costs no more on most flights than
your flying Peasant; it's one of the perks of being a loyal
customer who is willing to pay 20 percent more on occasion as well
as to take a 20 percent bonus, both events occurring with similar
frequency, though my paying less happens more than my paying more.

Note to Carol: want to go to Albuquerque in March or April?
$210 on Northwest, $219 on United, $299 on WN. As of 8:15a today.

ML> What's famous about it, aside from one incident that leads
ML> one to believe that Douglas MacArthur wasn't quite the
ML> gifted leader that he set himself up as.
...
GJ> MacArthur had written off the Australians as useless.

What I said.

GJ> I have just heard a sad story of a German who wished to visit his
 GJ> girlfriend in Australia

It becomes clearer that this guy had some idea what he was up to.

 ML> I don't know - subsequent reports indicate that he's sold his
ML> story for far more than the E600 required to rectify his error.
GJ> No one else will be able to get away with that gimmick, though.

Not for a few years, but fairly soon, and in our lifetimes, it'll
happen again.

 ML> I'm wondering whether he's not more like a Wrong-Way Corrigan
ML> type who deliberately ignored instructions so as to be able to
ML> do what he wanted in the first place.
GJ> I recall that name, but not the circumstances of his travels.

The gent, unable to get official clearance for a transatlantic
flight, filed papers for a flight between New York and California,
and then promptly took his plane across the Atlantic to Ireland,
subsequently pleading lack of navigational expertise.

Vesper
cat: booze
servings: 1

3 oz gin
1 oz vodka
1/2 oz Lillet blanc

Stir with ice; strain into cocktail glass.
Garnish with large twist of lemon peel.

US Airways magazine, Jan 07

Note: this is after an Ian Fleming recipe from a James Bond book;
only Bond requests that the drink be shaken, not stirred, something
that evoked outrage among the serious martini-drinking public.
