Ärende: IN-FLOOR HEATING 70110
==============================
-=> Quoting Glen Jamieson to Jim Weller <=-

GJ> Many years ago, when I was working for the local electricity trust, at
GJ> a time when people were being encouraged to use more electricity,
GJ> in-floor heating was provided by copper-sheathed, aluminium oxide
GJ> insulated heating cables (Pyrotenax), cast into the concrete. There
GJ> were never any problems when that system was used - except for paying
 GJ> for the electricity.

Such systems are all the rage now in Yuppie McMansions, but just in
bathrooms with quarry tile floors, not the whole house.

A few VERY wealthy people in Toronto and Ottawa have had their driveways
done so they don't have to shovel snow. What a waste! Even if I could
afford to operate an electric driveway in winter I'd be embarrassed to.

If you don't want to shovel snow there are always homeless people who
could really use $20, who are happy to do it for you.

GJ> The Romans also used under-floor heating, from hot air ducts with a
GJ> slave feeding a fire at one end. I would have thought that a
GJ> variation of that method, with an oil burner and fan at the hot end
GJ> would be more satisfactory for you than messing around with water and
GJ> anti-freeze. After all, VW avoided cooling water problems in the
GJ> beetle by using only air for heating and cooling.

Hot water boilers do have advantages over forced air furnaces though:

- longer life
- more energy efficient
- a boiler can have zone valves for different parts of the house, with
separate thermostats but a furnace has just one thermostat controller.
- more even heat distribution
- narrower heating range (no highs and lows)
- quieter to run (no blower)
- cleaner (no recirculated dust)
- can economically pre-heat water going into an electric hot water tank,
  thereby reducing power bills

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Bitter Melon with Eggs
 Categories: Vegetables, Eggs, Filipino
      Yield: 4 Servings

    1/2 lb Bitter melon
      1 T Salt; plus 1/8 ts
      1 Scallion
      2 md Onion
      4 T Oil
      6 Garlic clove; minced
3 sm Tomato; peeled & chopped
      3 lg Egg; lightly beaten

Trim the pointed ends of the melons and then halve them the long way.
Scoop out the seeds and discard. Cut the outer shells crosswise, on
the bias, into 1/4" wide strips. In a bowl, stir one tablespoon salt
into two cups of water. Put in the melon strips and let them soak two
hours, then drain, rinse under running water, and pat dry.

Slice the scallion into 2" lengths, then cut again lengthwise into
thin strips. Peel the onions, halve them, and slice the halves to
  make fine half-rings.

Heat the oil in a medium skillet over a moderate flame. When the oil
is hot, add the garlic, and stir-fry until it is brown. Add the
onions, and stir-fry for two minutes. Add the tomatoes, and stir-fry
for another two minutes. Add the melon strips, and reduce the heat.
Fry for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the melon is tender.
Stir in the eggs and salt; cook as for scrambled eggs. Remove from
heat, fold in the scallion strips quickly, and serve.
