Ärende: IN-FLOOR HEATING 70113
==============================

I suppose there are such people, who don't mind paying to keep the
bathroom floor warm all day, so they can get the benefit for a few
minutes of use.

JW> A few VERY wealthy people in Toronto and Ottawa have had their

JW> I could afford to operate an electric driveway in winter I'd be

These days, with energy conservation in the minds of most thinking
people, such behaviour would certainly be valid grounds for criticism.
I would expect the owners of such multi-kilo-Watt powered driveways to
then get into their over-sized SUVs to drive the 1/2 mile to their
favourite gym, to get their exercise.

GJ> The Romans also used under-floor heating, from hot air ducts with a

JW> - narrower heating range (no highs and lows)
JW> - quieter to run (no blower)
JW> - cleaner (no recirculated dust)

Rather than under-floor hot air house heating, circulated air is more
common and practical. Here, reverse cycle air conditioning is used to
provide both heating and cooling, using the same air ducts, although
the ideal location of room air inlets is different for hot and cold.

I see no reason why a gas or oil-fired hot water boiler should last
longer than one which uses a heat exchanger air heater; on the
contrary. And a properly designed air heater should be at least as
efficient as one which uses circulating water as an intermediate
vehicle for transferring heat from the furnace to the occupants.

Hot air systems, like cooling air conditioners, use solenoid operated
dampers in room ducts to cut off air flow to some rooms when not
needed. These are controlled by switches located in a convenient
central place. Only one thermostat is required, in the return air
duct. In heating, as in cooling, good design of the system will give
even heat distribution. As the blower is located remotely from the
conditioned spaces, if it is a good design the sound is almost
imperceptable. The use of an air filter in the return air duct
ensures that only clean air is supplied to the rooms. An additional
advantage of ducted air systems is that "make-up" air can be adjusted
to trade "freshness" against loss of heat. Smokers require more air
changes, and so cost money.

The main advantage of the more expensive and less efficient hot water
system is that takes up less space. Insulated pipes are much smaller
than insulated air ducts. This is a major consideration when heating
multi-storey buildings. For our usual single-storey houses there is
always plenty of space in the ceilings for ducts. Most hotels and
other large buildings use water as the transfer medium for both
heating and cooling.

JW> Title: Bitter Melon with Eggs

 JW> 1/2 lb Bitter melon

JW> crosswise, on the bias, into 1/4" wide strips. In a bowl, stir one
JW> tablespoon salt into two cups of water. Put in the melon strips and
JW> let them soak two hours, then drain, rinse under running water, and
 JW> pat dry.

This is an instruction frequently given when preparing bitter melon,
to reduce "bitterness", but is something I never do. I like the
bitterness of bitter melon, which is why I cook and eat it. That
flavour should be balanced against other flavours in the dish.
