During our remodel project we discovered a fact about the "return air
ducts" in our house. They are not ducts at all, but rather simply
the space between two studs in the wall. There is a grate near the
ceiling for the return air. It does not actually enter a "duct"
until it gets to the basement.

Our blower is in the basement, and thus the sound is not heard for
   the most part.

There is a filter where the return air enters into the firebox (or
   cooling condenser coils).

GJ> The main advantage of the more expensive and less efficient hot water

The ducts supplying fresh hot or cold air into the rooms are not
insulated. They are oval galvanized metal, perhaps a little bit
bigger than the oval you can form with two hands touching thumbs and
forefingers. These ducts run up the walls between the studs. The
ones going to the second floor undoubtedly have some degree of heat
loss, but it is into the walls of the first floor and so adds to the
general heat anyhow. No problem because of lack of insulation.
