Lustau Don Nuno dry oloroso - dark Dr. Pepper-like color,
enticing Christmas-pudding spicy aroma. On the palate
raisin and coffee flavors but almost jarringly dry. Long finish
- fruit, nuts, touch of citrus.

Osborne Manzanilla - unfortunate nose of nail-polish
remover, rather thin on the palate, pleasantly citrus with
mushroom finish. Not acid enough. Too bad as I really like
the Amontillado.

Casarsa Pinot Blanc 05 (Venezie) - I bought this thinking it was
a Pinot Grigio, but it had no P.G. character, not a big surprise
as it wasn't one, my bad; but I also thought it was wine, and it
had no wine character ... tasted like slightly alcoholic wash
water with a little bleach thrown in for flavor, i.e., what you
might expect wine to taste like if you were closely familiar
with desperadoes such as Kevin.

Sir Robert Burnett gin - one of the great bargains in the
gin world; it's an aggressively junipered drink with light
citrus and spice in the background. Tasted favorably against
Bombay Sapphire (the Sapphire was suave and delicate, the
Burnett gutsy and without the finesse, but very much what
you want to drink gin for). $11 for 1.75 liters. Made in
Baltimore under license from a company in Kentucky out of
ingredients specified by one Sir Robert Burnett in England
in the 1700s.

Cognac Claude Chatelier XO Extra - should have been a hair
suspicious, as this costs less than most labels' VSOP. Well.
The color is nice, but the aroma has as much in common with
grain neutral as it does with Cognac. Alcohol and wood, a
touch of grapy grape, not much going for it. Palate: complex
but with flavors not normal for Cognac: burned chocolate,
pepper, maybe a touch of vanilla. Finish medium, burning,
and green. Turns out that this is one of several labels (the
others including Landy and Maxim's) of Pierre Ferrand, which
is supposed to be a respectable company. Courvoisier VS is
better; Courvoisier VSOP is much better; Hennessy VS is much
much better. Gotta hunt me up some Hennessy soon.

Tivi Valley Nature's Garden vegetable crisps (a seasonal mix
of root vegetables (taro, sweet potato, purple sweet potato,
potato, yam, lotus root), palm oil, sea salt) imported by
Natural Group Inc. Oxnard, CA, Product of China - though the
chips were crispy, they tasted slightly stale, probably
because of the roof-of-mouth-coating oil in which they had
been fried. Despite their being only half the price of Terra
chips, go with the Terra chips.

Sunny Sea smoked oysters - average-to-small oysters, not
oversmoked but with an odd bitter taste. Hardly salted at
all, which was rather peculiar. Worth at most the 99c they
cost, but not really bad.
