-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

GJ> Even so! It is all a compromise between brilliance, duration of life
GJ> and the energy put into it. Life of man; life of bulbs - the same.
ML> The correspondence between caloric input and duration of life
ML> is not necessarily inverse! And if low brilliance meant long
ML> life, why don't we have everlasting idiots?

Sometimes it seems as if that is we do have!

GJ> Some, however, would maintain that it is all arranged by the great
 GJ> engineer in the sky...
ML> I think it's the great comedian in the sky.

The main argument against Darwinian evolution, one which the
creationists never seem to mention, is sexual reproduction.
Logically, it is the most unlikely system it is possible to consider
as resulting from evolution, and must have been devised by something
with a wonderful sense of humour and appreciation of the ridiculous!

GJ> statistics of electrocuted babies per population in USA with its
GJ> lethal power sockets, Australia with semi-safe sockets, and UK with
 GJ> super-safe sockets.

ML> Or Chinese and Japanese lethal power sockets delivering 220.
ML> Of course such peoples are more obedient, the characteristic
ML> (myself notwithstanding) intensified by generations of
 ML> electrical-jolt-enforced Darwinian evolution.

The Philippines has the 220 V system, but it is only 110 V between
either hole and ground. And Philippinos are the least obedient of any
Asians. They do counter this by having a high rate of reproduction.

ML> I wonder whether this has been done, with allowances made for
ML> the little plastic inserts that parents are encouraged to buy.
GJ> And then have to remember to use and not lose. A switch is easier.

ML> Some of them are flip-out-flip-in permanent installations.

Effectively, a switch.

ML> It has come to my attention that I hate scallops. They used
ML> to be juicy and sweet (even the ones at the waffle house near
ML> Clean Dave's were excellent), and they've gotten worse over
ML> time to the degree that every scallop I've had this year with
ML> the exception of half of one (the dish had a number of fishy
ML> comestibles, including a half of a really good scallop) has
ML> been a pale imitation of what I remember scallops as being.
ML> I should go down to Nantucket Island sometime, where there
ML> are still good scallops. Oh, I lied. I have in fact had two
ML> good half-scallops this year. One the one mentioned above,
ML> the other a piece of sushi that came unbidden among an order
 ML> of other things.

Allow me to quote you, as of a couple of months ago. (I hate myself
when I do this!)

"I'd found some nice South Australian scallops with roe at the Greek
fishmonger's at the Central Market (same place where the mussels had
come from), so for breakfast we had sauteed scallops with sherry and
butter over toast, very nice, if I say so myself; then it was time to
gird our loins and prepare for the picnic itself."

 ML> vitamins (A, D, and E as I recall).
GJ> True. Also true that childhood obesity has been increasing. TV would
GJ> be the greatest single cause of that, with the combination of adverts
GJ> encouraging the excess consumption of sweet and fatty things, and the
GJ> too many hours spent sitting, watching those adverts.

ML> That's right. If the kids were out playing in the street instead
ML> of having their ugly mugs glued to the tube, they'd be run over
ML> by lorries instead of having heart attacks.

There are back yards. In Australia.

Over one year, in Australia, $410 million was spent by the top 10 on
advertising. In one week, just during children's viewing hours, the
numbers of adverts were:
Cadbury chocolate and milk products 177
McDonald's 109
KFC 88
Domino's Pizza 78
Dolmio pasta sauces 67
Sanitarium cereals and breakfast drink 63
Nestle Nesquick cereal 61
Pandaroo Asian food range 56 (What a name!)
Nestle Neslac Toddler Gold 53
Lenard's chicken products 49

GJ> OK, what is a "frisee"? Something like an edible frisbee?

ML> You may consider regular lettuce "no-frills" lettuce.
ML> Consider frisee lettuce the opposite.

Ah, a "frizzy" lettuce.
