===============================
ML> Julian's flies way under the radar.
 JW> Is Julian's a chain?

Could be. The food had a sort of commissary aspect to it.
But there's also a chain called "Jillian's," which offers
food, billiards, and "electronic stimulation attractions"
(whatever those are, but my imagination is working overtime
at 4:30 am).

ML> My brother had split pea and barley soup (an odd combo)
JW> I have made such a soup on occasion. It worked out OK.

It's still an odd combo. Would be redeemed by large proportions
of smoked pork products, though.

ML> (for an ex-med school prof he is
ML> quite afraid of hospitals and operations).
JW> Perhaps for good reason, having seen what can go wrong. I think
JW> nurses make the most difficult and paranoid patients of all.

Aside: when I accompanied him to the hospital, I introduced
myself as "Dr. Loo's son," which they interpreted as "Dr. Loo,
his son," so they gave me the job of doing the medical history
interview (and eventually cleaning the urinals and stuff).

The old guy got his own back at one of the nurses, who, rather
condescendingly, asked what he did, and he said, somewhat curtly,
"teach medical students." Later he repented and allowed that he
hadn't been at the office (he still has one) in two years.

ML> Dover sole [...] as I've said, my father likes to order
ML> things that he never could get when he was young.
 JW> Good for him!

I'm not discouraging it, though he has never stinted himself
when he could avoid doing so. It was my mother whom I encouraged
to take a first-class trip around the world when she was first
diagnosed with cancer - she refused. Funnily, I had been present
at one of my parents' frequent totally irrational blowups - he
wanted to go someplace, but she (who almost never went anyplace
except when running away from home, which she did periodically)
said, with utter scorn, "when I want to go on a trip, I'll do it
right, first class, by myself." When the logical (to me) time
for her to do so, it was no go. Ah, well.

 ML> I may however
ML> point out that to my knowledge he has never ordered Dover sole
 ML> when he was paying.
JW> He still has all his wits then. [g]

Pretty much.

Further to our conversation about palate fatigue: I still think
I could get tired of pork (my favorite vegetable with the possible
exception of eggplant); but beef is my favorite meat, and I cannot
see myself tiring of it, especially if it is served as great
bloody chunks.

Shortly after complaining that it was too cold to go out
I went out for $10 worth of sirloin and instead found that
round roast was $1.48/lb, so I got $10 worth and dumped half
in the freezer. Roasted 3 lb slow in the oven: had dinner,
breakfast, and lunch (10 oz each); then went out for my concert;
then hooked up for dinner with my friend Jackie, and where did
we go? The Brazilian BBQ (the one I took the echo picnic to a
few years ago). Had beef, beef, beef, beef, beef, beef, beef,
chicken hearts, and pork ribs. Each beef represents a 2 to 4
ounce serving. I regretted the pork ribs, which were way salty.
The chicken hearts - I haven't been there in a while, but the
server brought the chicken hearts right away and seemed a little
disappointed when I took only half the skewer. I would have taken
the rest of it, only Jackie really doesn't like offal, even to
look at; but if I'd come in disguise and they hadn't put on the
chicken hearts for me, I'd have been perfectly happy with another
serving of beef. So I staggered home and fell on the bed in meat
coma, only to get up recently with a craving for a dose of FIDO
and a serving of beef. There is only about 12 oz of that roast
left. Truly, I must have been a gaucho in a previous life.
