Your post was *very* nicely done from the viewpoint of a hobby golfer.  I
really enjoyed it.   

Most folks can stop right here, because I agree with all you say.  I just
want to add-on as a below average golfer [I'm bad]

hn-> Par is often more a matter of the length of the hole than how
difficult
hn-> it is...

Amen! If I could hit the drive farther than 180 yards or so I would have a
much lower handicap.  Constantly adding a stroke or two or three because I
can't hit far really hurts.

hn-> I have a friend who can drive like a bullet but couldn't putt downhill

LOL  A nice turn of a phrase!

hn-> My best round of golf was 39 on a front nine at a local
course...that's hn-> 3 over par and for me it was a phenominal 9 holes of
golf...

Nice.   My best round ever was a 42 on my local course, a rather short
course.   That was for 9 holes as I seldom play 18 any more.

Isn't that a *great* feeling?  It happens to me every once in a while, and
I glory in the inner feeling that the round will go just fine.  It must be
the same feeling athletes get when the are, as they call it, "in the zone."
 
hn->  If I can beat you 19 times out of every 20 that we play...I need to 
hn-> have some enticement for you to even wager with me....so that you'll 
hn-> actually have a reasonable chance if you do well to win the wager. 

[sigh]  But *but* *but* many good amateur golfers [or bowlers] will not
give *any* handicap in non-league rounds.  They feel it is their
God-given-right to unfairly take your betting money.  My handicap has run
from 12 to its present 22 or so, but two of my league foursome refuse to
give handicaps on bets after league......one has an *8* handicap and the
other an 11.   [g]  They want no part of a level the field game.
 
hn->  I never got better than a 16 and usually settled right around 20-23 
hn->  for a handicap. 

It's still fun tho' ain't it!

hn-> We used to play penny a stroke, dime a hole and a dollar for 
hn-> KP (closest to the pin) on the par three's.  But that's because we 
hn-> were cheap (grin) 

We usually play for ten cents a hole.  [very cheap]  [chuckle]  That's why
I don't get stiff necked about not getting handicap strokes.

hn-> I was always a fairly fast player and I preferred to walk the course
hn-> rather than use a golf cart...

Yes, I like walking the course.  One of the great joys of golf for me is
that now that I have asthma controlled, and sun block was invented, I can
walk in the sun and enjoy the outdoors.  Riding in a cart, hiding from the
sun and the vigor's of walking, is too reminiscent of the old days.

hn-> most courses now won't let you walk the course....well they will let 
hn-> you but you have to rent a cart anyway  (grin). 

That hasn't occurred around here in the boondocks as far as I know.  A few
courses prohibit walking, but they mean *no* walking.
