Ärende: RE: Golf and NewMex 002
===============================
Howdy Michael!

-> -> point that the par numbers are peculiar. It sounds as though a
->  -> 72 course should really be a 90 course or something, because it's
-> -> likely that the real par score is more like 90.
-> HN> That's precisely what makes it so wonderful...
->
-> There is obviously something I'm missing.
->
Kinda sorta...you either enjoy it or you don't. The goal is to shoot par, and
an "average" golfer won't usually do that...really good ones can but even
then not all the time.

-> HN> Which is easier to make par on, a par five that's short for it's
->  HN> designation, no
-> HN> traps and a straight wide flat fairway, or a par three thats' at the
->  HN> long end of
-> HN> the designation, over a huge ravine about 6 feet lower on the other
-> HN> side of the ravine, and a sloped wide but shallow green?
->
-> Yeah, but why is this five a five and this three a three? Why aren't
-> they both fours?
->
Because of the length of the hole. The longer the hole the more strokes it
should take to reach the green and make your two putts. There are ranges of
length that determine what Par for the hole will be. There are no par sixes, so

even if the hole is 800yards long...it would still have to be a par 5. I'd have

to go looking up the rules to see what the appropriate lengths are ...but I
think anything under 200 yards will be a par three and anything over it will be

a par 4 I'm not too sure where the division is between par 4 and 5. So there
can be "long" par threes that are tough to make, and "short" par 4's that are
easier to make "par" on them than on the par 3. Therefore the most difficult
hole on the course is not neccesarily the longest. One of my favorite holes at
one of my local courses is a par five that is a bit over 500 yds long...but
it's a
gently sloping fairway going down hill towards the green and a decent shot
has a good chance of getting a lot of extra roll down the fairway and you
have a much better chance at getting a better score on it.

-> HN> Each day the course is different than the day before...aside from
-> HN> moving the pins around the green, the weather and other factors are
-> HN> different. And most importanly the players are the biggest variable.
-> HN> One day the greens are soft and hold an approach shot easily, the
next
-> HN> day they can be as hard as linolium and the ball simply bounces right
-> HN> off the green. If you play early in the day it's a totally different
-> HN> course than it is when you play later in the day. That's what makes
-> HN> golf such an enticing and frustrating game...you're really playing
-> HN> yourself every round and that's your toughest opponent to beat!
->
-> Interesting disquisition.
->
Thanks, I hope it helps a bit, but I'm not sure of it (grin).

-> -> But one isn't then betting on the result of the match but
-> -> rather against the skill of the handicappers/oddsmakers.
-> HN> Which is why the handicapping system is pretty much done by
formula
-> HN> averaging play over a long period of time.
->
-> How do rank beginners fit into this scheme? With golfers
-> I guess it's pretty easy, but what about horses, see below.
->
-> -> Which also makes me wonder about course records - you
->  -> know, "set by Man-o-War at 1'51.3"" - if the favorite
-> -> gets a weight handicap, what's the meaning of this number?
->  HN> Uhmmmm,....he's still the fastest?
->
-> Still meaningless to me.
->
Me too I'm not really up on horse handicapping (grin)
When we go to the track Anne bets on the horse who's sporting the colors
she likes...me I wait until just before post time and go down and bet on the
longest odds on the board...I may not win often but it gives me somthing to
yell about when the pack rounds the final turn and heads for the finish line!

-> Let's say Man-o-War runs 1'51.3" and sets the course record
-> while carrying a jockey and six sandbags.
->
-> At some future race, let's say Unknown Anonymous runs 1'51.0,
-> breaking the course record, carrying a jockey and a Big Mac.
->
-> Why is the course record going to go to Unknown Anonymous,
-> when Man-o-War with the Big Mac (ontopicizer) would have run
-> the course in 90 seconds?
->
I dunno the horse racing commision deals with that (grin) I have enough
trouble with golf!
chat with you soon
