MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

      Title: Pan-Barbecued Beef
 Categories: Beef, Barbecue, Sandwich
      Yield: 12 Servings

      4 lb Boneless beef chuck
      3 c  Water (up to 4 cups)
      1 md Onion stuck with 2 whole
           -cloves
      2    Bay leaves
      2 T  Butter or margarine
    1/2 c  Finely chopped onion
      2 T  Brown sugar
    1/2 t  Salt
    1/2 t  Dry mustard
      1 c  Ketchup
      2 T  Cider or white vinegar
      2 T  Worcestershire sauce

     Place meat, water, onion (with cloves) and bay leaves in a large,
  heavy saucepot. Simmer, covered, until tender, about 3 hours. Remove
  meat and reserve 1 cup of the beef broth [JM suggests the rest of the
  broth be reserved for other uses!] Discard onion and bay leaves. Cool
  and shred meat [a fork should work well for this-JM]; set aside.
     In the same saucepot in which the meat was cooked, melt butter. Add
  chopped onion; saute until tender. Stir in sugar, salt, mustard,
  ketchup, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce and the reserved 1 cup beef
  broth. Add shredded beef; mix gently. Simmer, covered, for 30
  minutes. Serve on split hamburger buns, rolls or sliced rye,
  pumpernickel or sourdough bead.
