Dale and I were discussing options in email, but there weren't any
that could really be done.

Firs of all, the layout of the kitchen leaves no room for more 
or larger doors or windows.  On the north side, there is a large
double window.  On the east side, a single door leads to the 
parlor.  On the south, there is the stairwell flanked on the
left by the cellar door (and stairs to the cellar) and on
the right by the door to the mudroom and the stairs to the
second floor.  On the west, there is a pantry, a closet, and the
bathroom.


The stove, even if all the external stuff was stripped off to
produce a non-accessorized steel box, would still measure 36 inches
wide by 30 inches deep.  Because the back door would require a sharp
90-degree turn in less than 3 feet of space, the steel box would
have to come in through the front door, through the parlor, and 
then into the kitchen that way.  And even if I were to take the
door off, that doorway is still only 29 inches.

I suppose that taking off the trim on the door would be an option,
but that woodwork has been there 80 years and still has the orginal
varnished finish.  I value my old house for its craftsman-style
charm and details and ripping up woodwork or widening doorways is
absolutely not worth it for the sake of a stove.  There are plenty
of stoves out there, and I have lots of time. [g]
