ML> Put it this way. Last I saw the BBS owner, he and I were
ML> shall we say not on speaking terms. It has, though, been
ML> pointed out that my own posts have a higher than normal
ML> percentage of advertisements next to them.

I shall have to try once more to get into the 'flyers'. I am wary
about giving out my email address, though.

GJ> In past years, talking to business associates in Singapore, I learnt
GJ> quite a lot, from the iniquitous 200% sales tax on private cars, to
ML> Probably the best thing about Singapore. Would that it were 500%.
ML> Singapore could do well without private cars at all.

Taxis and other cars used in the extracting of money from tourists are
subjected to much lower taxes, so it is possible that many of the
private cars you see are thus employed. Hong Kong appears to have a
similar arrangement, as there are something like 3 times as many taxis
there as private cars.

GJ> the fact that the (Lee) government restricted car insurance to be
GJ> taken out using only one company, which also happened to be owned by
 GJ> Mrs Lee.
ML> I could see that being a touch grating.

But not surprising.

ML> Most of the foreign prostitutes were from Malaysia. They
ML> Now, with the globalized economy, many are from China and the
ML> Philippines with a significant number from east Europe (I
ML> understand that these last tend to be a fairly expensive
 ML> novelty item).

Interesting how changes in World wealth distribution influence
demographics. All of purely academic interest to us, of course.

ML> I ate roast beef at least three times a day, ungarnished,
 ML> 8 to 12 oz at a shot.
 ML> That's 1500-2000 Calories a day, all protein.
GJ> Not really. There would be a lot of fat in that as well - possibly
GJ> 10% or more, which has a much higher calorific value than protein.
ML> Well, the cut of beef I used runs 493 Kcal per 300 grams, so
ML> you can do the math.
GJ> Say, 3,000 per day or more. OK for moderately vigorous exercise.

ML> Lost your calculator, have you.

Oh, all right, instead of doing it mentally, I'll get the calculator!

Let's see.. Say, 12 oz, about 330g x 3 = 990g, 990/300 x 493 = 1630Cal

Grrr! You win. I forgot that you were a Mathematician, way back, but
I had to repeat a year of Maths at uni.

I wonder what the Calories per gram of 'roo meat would be, as its fat
level is of the order of 2% or less. Possibly much the same as wild
venison. Could you eat nothing but that for a week?

GJ> your body. What were your weight, cholesterol, blood sugar, blood
GJ> pressure values before and after.
ML> I would guess same, same, marginally lower, marginally lower.
ML> Hap would guess lower for the first. Ian would probably guess
 ML> lower for the second.
GJ> Better to measure, rather than guess. Scientific precision!

ML> The times I've been measured, the consumption of meat
 ML> does next to nothing.

Does the consumption of any particular foods in excessively great or
minute quantities influence your physiology? To what to *you*
attribute your arterial faults?

[Carol, no rude comments from the side-lines, if you don't mind!]

minute. Drain & put into a large, clean bowl. In a non-aluminium pan,
combine the vineagr, sugar, salt & ginger. Bring to a boil, then pour
over vegetables, & cool. Put into jars, cover, & store in the fridge
  for up to a week.
