 Maybe not, but I don't think the sugar
 needs to be powdered to start. As I mentioned
 to Sean, the originator might have grabbed
 powdered while working out the recipe and
 never thought of working out the simpler
 method later, and this was the measuring
 method he/she was used to. Volume of
 powdered sugar certainly is an inexact
 measure, as it depends on the fineness of
 the grind and the looseness of the packing.
 Still, there is a reproducible endpoint
 specified, the hard-ball stage of
 concentration and cooking, so maybe a loose
 packed 3 cups of powdered would just take
 more boiling.

 If I were doing this, I would rather
 figure out the weight equivalent of granulated
 sugar because it is cheaper.

 I got to use my high boots this morning!
 My town only got moderate snow during last
 week's deep-freeze and lake-effect event,
 though I think some town just south of Buffalo
 got 4-5 feet during that time, and of course
 Oswego County got even more. That's close to
 Bodle country, so I hope they are OK. But
 yesterday's (2/13-2/14) storm was a general
 storm, not lake effect, so we got a bit more.
 I can't estimate how much, though, because
 of the drifting effect. I have a drift about
 2 feet high outside my back door, but a few
 yards beyond that there are grass tufts
 sticking through. I guess we got about 6
 inches last week and 6-8 inches more last
 night. I did have to wade through a few
 feet of snow drifted between cars this
 morning to get into mine, so I justified
 the boots. What most people in the country
 fail to realize about lake-effect snow near
 our Great Lakes is how directional it is.
 If you are in the direction of the "plume",
 you get buried until the wind shifts. But
 the Weather Channel says "Buffalo" when
 the feet of snow fell several miles south,
 in Orchard Park. Because nobody not local
 knows where Orchard Park is!

 Tuesday's paper gave a table of town, last-week
 storm accumulations, and season totals, including
 Redfield/141"/282"; Syracuse/19.6"/69.7";
 Buffalo/6.8"/63.5"; Rochester/4.2"/44".
 So don't worry about Burt and me, we're
 not doing too bad.
