Things to make me forget the state of my wine cellar (failed) -

Trove California Pinot Grigio 05 - nose of pears, malolactic
fermentation, a strange chemical harshness; generic California
cheap white wine taste - not horrid, but I don't see the point
exactly. Quite cloying after a few sips. Longish stone fruit
finish was a surprise, but it didn't really help.

Trove California Cabernet Sauvignon 04 - I got this because of
a refund offer that brings the price down to what Glen pays for
his box wine. I find it the equal in taste and value (even
without the rebate) to a Vin du Pays d'Oc or the cheap Bordeaux
we used to get for $3.99 a bottle - slightly green tasting,
but decent tannin and some structure; a standard brambly aspect
with a surprising undertone of walnuts. Finish nuts (unspecified)
and overripe grapes with stems. Not bad. Carol doesn't like it
and got the Delicato Shiraz, which she prefers (and which is all
in all not bad either but somewhat sweeter and overtly fruitier).

Things to make me forget I'm not flying this week (failed) -

Taylor Fladgate LBV 99 - interesting minty aroma that gave way to
an ordinary overripeness. Flavor woody, woodsy, grapy, some of the
minty-herbal stuff coming back. Plenty of tannin on the palate.
Finish grapy and slightly stemmy but a little rotten. A funny hot
spiciness on the back of the throat. I wasn't thrilled. Not so
good as United Airlines's Sandeman's Founder's Reserve.

Blue Diamond BOLD Jalapeno Smokehouse almonds - pleasantly
green Jalapeno aroma, smoke in the background. Flavor: mildly
smoky, slightly hot, with a strange undertone in some nuts of
mustard (cross-contamination from the wasabi soy nut line?)
and in others of curry powder (foreshadowing of a new flavor?).
Almond flavor - unlike in other varieties of this brand -
is never lost. Aftertaste of smoke and sweetness; a bit of
afterburn. On the whole quite nice: I'd give these a B, mostly
because the flavors are in fact not BOLD at all. I got these
because they were on sale for $2 a can at Stop & Shop, plus I
had a $1 coupon. I believe the term is, Sacerdote please
correct me if I'm wrong, w00t. No better than United's mixed
nuts, which have an unpleasant tendency to be heavy on the
walnuts these days.

Things to make me forget meat this week (failed) -

Boca Chik'n Patties - texture somewhat mushy, grain too fine.
Aroma of dim sum cooked in not so great oil. Flavor reminiscent
of the outside of chicken nuggets. Not wholly unpleasant if you
like chicken nuggets.

Gardenburger Chik'n Grill - quite nasty: green vegetable aroma
with some hints of burned BBQ grill. On the palate: green beans,
beans that are green (unripe soybeans or something?), a touch of
cumin. Quite salty. Texture a bit mushy but inconsistent - way
too soft in some spots and just a little soft in others.
