An interesting subject, but a tad on the alarmist side.

I will say firstoff that I am pretty anti-MSG. Back as early
as the late '50s, when I went to one specific Chinese restaurant,
I'd be afflicted with enormous headaches after every meal. I
would complain, and people would say, oh, you just ate too
much (I was a slightly but not amazingly chubby child). And I'd
say, I didn't eat all that much, and if I had, why is the pain
in my head, not in my belly? to which there was no coherent
answer. Of course, my father is a scientist, so he discounted
Chinese Restaurant Syndrome, lactose intolerance, and just about
everything else possible (he now buys Lactaid after having
denied for decades that lactose intolerance existed - despite his
getting cramps and diarrhea and lightheadedness after having
milk products. About two years ago, that suddenly changed, and
the fridge has Lactaid milk, and the medicine cabinet is crammed
with lactase pills) because nobody had done double blind studies
on the subject. Speaking of blind.

Point number one is that I agree that it's a slow poisoning.
But I don't see that it's doing us enormous harm anyway.
We live longer than ever before, and we're not notably less
productive for MSG poisoning. Anyhow, one man's poison is
another's umami.

Other addictive substances are common in diets worldwide. Top among
these, in my book, is caffeine (in coffee naturally, but why on earth
do they put it in other things?). Sugar. Alcohol. Luckily, my only
criminal-level addiction is to beef, and even more luckily, though
the PETA folks may see me as a felon, nobody else does.

The main reason, I think, isn't MSG. It's SOFT DRINKS first and
JUNK FOOD second. Lack of exercise also comes in there at some point.

Nothing. That's n-o-t-h-i-n-g. If you wanted to ban glutamates,
you'd have to ban mushrooms and dozens of other things.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.01

      Title: Electronic Gourmet's Garlic Soup
 Categories: Soups, Appetizers, Cyberealm
      Yield: 8 servings

      6 oz Olive Oil
      2 cl Garlic, peeled and crushed
      4 c  Water
      2 tb Salt
      1 tb Monosodium Glutamate
      4 c  Chicken Stock
      8 sl Fresh White Bread
      8 x  Eggs

  1) Put the oil and garlic into a very heavy large pot. Saute until
     almost golden brown in colour. Add the water, salt, monosodium
     glutamate and stock.

  2) Simmer for 3 hours. Check the seasoning.

  3) To serve: Place a slice of bread in each soup bowl. Put a ladle
     of the hot soup in the bowl and immediately, on top of the bread,
     break an egg. The egg will congeal and the bread will go to the
     bottom of the bowl.

  Note: Can be made a day ahead and refrigerated. To serve, follow step
  3.
