Ärende: School NY Trip

So, the seventh was Cathedral's annual New York trip. This year, we set out
to go see a showing of Phantom of the Opera. The whole day was pretty
humorous, especially the bus ride to and from, in which choir repeatedly
put the 'fun' back in 'dysfunctional.'

But, I have to admit, my friend's tastes in food are...questionable, to say
the least. Either that, or the lot of you has rubbed off on me. haha

We spent four hours on the bus just getting to New York. It was awful. The
bus driver took the longest way possible to the city, bringing us way up
through Bedford and then doubling back to get into the city...at about
noon.

That gave us about an hour and a half to go and get food, but we were
restricted to stay exclusively in the Times Square area. No big deal;
that's normal for the school's trip.

We were all broken down into groups of four or five, and the first thing
out of everyone's mouth was, "Let's go to Hard Rock!" I HATE Hard Rock. I
can't stress it enough. I can find tons of restaurants here to go and get a
nine dollar cheeseburger. I don't need to do it in NYC. And I said that. As
it turned out, the wait to get in was about sixty minutes, so we skipped
that. The God of Good Lunch was smiling upon me.

So, we decided to go someplace else. We were walking down the street, and
some of my friends caught sight of this all-you-can-eat chinese buffet, and
chose to go there for lunch. My friend Rachael and I said that there was
this little place further down that was called Sahara Grill, and that we'd
like to go and check it out. No one agreed to go with us, and I was crushed
because we were in the middle of Manhattan, which is full of awesome,
small, unique restaurants, and I was going to go eat at a typical Chinese
buffet. 

But one of the chaperones said that she didn't want chinese food either,
and offered to take Rach and I to the small place up the street some more.

Sahara Grill was set up with a deli-style counter, and a narrow line for
people to order, and at the end of the line, pay. Behind the guy taking
lunch orders were these two vertical rotating things that held lamb and
chicken (I believe). There were a lot of candies and cakes sitting on the
counter, as well. Looking around and feeling like this was the place we
wanted to eat, Rach and I decided to order.

We both got 'Doener Kebabs.' It was a pita PACKED full of shaved lamb,
topped off with a kind of hot sauce, a mixed-vegetable-thing (which had big
chunks of cucumber, shaved red cabbage [raw], onions, a hint of garlic, and
had this spice in it that I couldn't identify. Whatever spice it was was a
little bitter, but was good nonetheless.), and the vegetable salad thing
was topped off with a white sauce (which I'm pretty sure was a yogurt
sauce, and it was seasoned with dill and something else.) We got these
little dessert cakes to have afterwards, and it was like a sponge cake full
of strawberry preserves. It was really, really good. Both of them cost us
about $5.00 total, and totally beat going to eat at a Chinese place.

After lunch, Rach and I had a little more time to explore Times Square, so
we decided to spend it at Toys R' Us so that we could ride the ferris wheel
they have inside. Then, we went to go see Phantom, which was awesome,
boarded the bus again and went home. But lunch was definitely the highlight
of my day.
