Ärende: New Years gift!
=======================
Hi Ruth,

-> RH> Junk Chinese imports, no doubt.

-> Most likely.

 RH> I can't really see Target selling Viking or Bernina!

If Wal-Mart can sell Snger and Brother, shouldn't Target (a step above
W-M) carry the step above machines? (G) One would think so in real life
but no such reality.

-> RH> Occasionally. Sometimes they're pretty darned funny.

-> As in English as written by a non speaker of the language? Stop & read
-> the manuals for some of your stuff not made in the USA; the language can
-> be most confusticating. (G)

 RH> In those cases, I've been known to switch to the German or Italian
 RH> instructions. In a weird way, it works better. They're a mess, but
 RH> less elegantly commensurate (Chinese ebay speak ... you want
 RH> confusing!) than the English ones.

I'd read the German or Spanish; Steve would stick with German. But, the
mangled English is getting more and more common, even in this country.
Ever notice how many people "ax" you to do something instead of "asking"
you? I hear it too often now but thankfully haven't seen it in print
yet.

 RH> -> -> He should have though of a nice roast pork or ham instead of
 the meal on -> the hoof.

 RH> Bacon!

He bought a pound today---of turkey bacon. We were over at Fresh Market
getting other stuff and he decided to get it. Had BLT for lunch but
turkey bacon ain't nothin' like the real thing.

-> Something on that line. For me, a knife and cutting board will do as
-> good a job (or better) than some of the fancy gizmos. After all, every
-> bit of cabbage doesn't have to be exactly like its neighbors; a bit of

 RH> And it takes ten seconds to wipe down the knife. Drying plastic bits
 RH> is a pain in the butt.

I leave that to the dish drainer and air.

-> wanted to know if she was Steve's daughter & let him/us know how well
-> she'd done.

 RH> Every Ruth I've ever known has had a big creative streak somehow.

Took getting away from home for mine to really develop. My now civil
engineer sister was considered "the artist in the family" because my
parents took a long time to realise that fabric, needle & thread can
be an art from too.

-> -> No, just inferior chocolate. AFAIK, poi doesn't come in chocolate

-> RH> You never know, with fusion cuisine!

-> True, but it's mostly mixed with fruit for flavoring, at least that
-> which we saw.

 RH> Oh well. Chocolate might have improved it.

Saw the "Dirty Jobs" guy (Mike Something or other) working in a taro
patch last night. It was on the Big Island. They didn't show any poi
making; I wish they had, and let him taste the fruits of his labors. (G)

-> RH> Shoulda known - German sports cars are born to be trouble.
 RH> ->
-> Actually it was the driver that caused the trouble. The dr that put it
-> back together said that I'd be doing good to walk on it again. I've been
-> walking now for 35 years since........miracles do happen & I've had a
-> number of them healing really bad breaks.

 RH> I know from miracles; I've seen a few, medically speaking. None were
 RH> mine though.

As of yesterday, the doctor's report was very good on my foot. Before
and after (surgery) x-rays showed improvement in bone gain in the
fracture area and I got permission to start light treadmill work. I
suspect I'll always have trouble with it but finally something has
worked to improve it.

-> Checked the net? I was very disappointed in the Hodgson Mills whole
-> wheat flour out here. King Arthur was a far sight better & milling our
-> own should be even better.

 RH> I was referring to the yeast. I don't bake enough bread any more to
 RH> worry about the flour. When I do, it's King Arthur; it's readily
 RH> available and the quality is consistent.

We had to import it in HI so I never got it there. I have liked the 2
bags I got here; another fantastic loaf of bread is baking in the
machine right now. It'll be interesting comparing our own milling to
it; Steve milled some barley today and made barley-wheat waffles. They
were pretty good.

Catch you later,
Ruth
