As I've pointed out elsewhere, musicians are notoriously immature.
The seats didn't recline. She actually arched her body back so her
hair would touch the sacred precincts of the old judge. He looked
more sour by the moment as she did this.

Yeah, the one. He expressed his opinions freely with body language
and actions (paper rattling, etc.). I had more fun watching him and
Ungar (Solzhenitsyn hid behind us) than the musicians. I didn't have
any formal connection with the competition except that the orchestra
I'm part of was one of the sponsors (along with the University of
Arkansas and Bechstein pianos).

Yeah, the one. I'd say second tier, not in the realm of Rubinstein,
Horowitz, Ashkenazy, Arrau, but solidly in the realm of "stars" along
with Argerich, Cliburn, Kempff, and so on. But a bit past his prime
and probably rattling his papers because he has little left to rattle.

Solzhie, the other big-name judge, is still I believe well in the
midst of the musical scene, though mostly as a conductor rather
than as a pianist.

Tartelettes au citron
cat: dessert
yield: 6 to 8

Pastry
1 egg
125 g flour
100 g butter, cut in bits
50 g powdered almonds
40 g fructose
Topping
2 eggs
40 g butter
40 g sugar
3 lemons, juice of
1 lemon, grated zest of
flour for the work surface
butter for the tart cups

Pastry: Mix the flour, powdered almonds, and fructose on the
work surface. Make a well in the center; break the egg into
it. Arrange the butter bits around the well. Using your hands
combine the ingredients to form a smooth dough. Put this in
plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 1 hr.

Oven at 410F/210C.

Roll the pastry on a floured work surface. Cut and put into
tart cups. Prick the bottoms with a fork. Bake 10 min and
let cool in the cups.

Filling: Melt the butter in a casserole over low heat; add
the remaining ingredients, stirring constantly. Allow to
thicken gently.

Unmold the tartelettes and fill with the lemon cream.
Chill and serve.
