ML> 16.7 million colors is the standard claim nowadays I understand.
ML> I don't even know the names of 16.7 million colors, not to mention
ML> not being able to see them (and my color vision is okay).
GJ> What a ridiculous claim! Although I don't fully understand current
GJ> methods of achieving colours on screens, I feel that in a small area,
GJ> such colour variation would be impossible. It sounds equivalent to
GJ> changing one pixel in an entire screen.

It's different than that to me.

   A programmer could say that
GJ> if that was to be done, the signal sent to the screen would be
GJ> changed, and therefore if that could be varied in 16.7 million ways,
GJ> that meant there were that many different colours available. Such a
GJ> mega-figure would immediately be seized upon by the sales people as a
GJ> way of impressing the customers, and there you are!

Okay, if that were the exact truth, my screen has 800x600,
which if my mediaeval math works correctly is 4.8x10^5.
So changing 1 pixel from black to (red, green, or blue)
would yield 1.44x10^6 "colors," and that's just changing
one pixel. Changing two pixels on the screen would yield
more than I can count, and changing all the pixels, well,
Dale, where are you.

That can't be the way it goes, and further, I can detect different
gradations of color (beyond red, green, or blue) per pixel (and in
fact see each pixel as a different unit). The Windows setup has a
useless color band that describes to me something like 16 individual
colors (not to mention those incomprehensible brightness and
intensity values).

-=> Mark Lewis said to Glen Jamieson <=-

 GJ> What a ridiculous claim!
ML> not really... it all comes down to bits and 8 bits making a byte...
ML> each bit is a light switch, for simplicity's sake... one or zero... on
 ML> of off...
GJ> Although I don't fully understand current methods of achieving
GJ> colours on screens, I feel that in a small area, such colour
GJ> variation would be impossible. It sounds equivalent to changing
GJ> one pixel in an entire screen.
 ML> that's exactly what's done... 24bit color is 3 bytes... in the
ML> internet, that's broken down to one byte (8 bits) per base color...
ML> those base colors being Reg, Green, and Blue corrosponding to the RGB
 ML> nomenclature

That doesn't seem to describe the situation Glen is discussing, where
a red screen with a pixel of blue at (100, 100) would be counted as a
different color from a red screen with a pixel of blue at (100, 101).

I'm imagining that there's some way in which each pixel can be
interpreted as having 16.7 million gradations of hue, brightness,
and intensity, hence the claim.

      Title: Chocolate Pretzels
 Categories: Snacks, German
   Servings: 8

    1/2 c Butter Or Margarine
    1/4 c Sugar
      1 lg Egg, Beaten
      1 ts Vanilla Extract
    1/4 c Milk
    1/4 c Cocoa
      2 c Flour, Unbleached, Unsifted

MMMMM--------------------------COCOA FROSTING-------------------------------
      2 tb Cocoa
  1 1/4 c Confectioners' Sugar
2 tb Butter Or Margarine, Melted
    1/2 ts Vanilla Extract

Cream 1/2 cup butter and the sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the
egg, vanilla, and milk. Sift cocoa and flour. Mix into butter mixture
until thoroughly blended. Chill dough until firm enough to handle (about
30 minutes). Using 2 T dough, roll a rope about 12 inches long between
your hands. Shape into a pretzel as follows: Make a loop bout 1 1/2 inches
in diameter by crossing the ends, leaving 1-inch tails. Flip the loop down
over the crossed ends. Press firmly into place. Place pretzels on greased
baking sheets. Bake at 350øF for about 10 minutes. Make frosting in a
small bowl. Mix cocoa and confectioners' sugar. Gradually stir in butter
and vanilla. If frosting is too thick, thin with milk. When pretzels are
cool, spread with Cocoa Frosting. Makes 2 dozen.
