  In the interest of gathering information that the group can use to
  decide on a Friday night restaurant trip, Gail and I returned to what
  used to be one of our favorite restaurants -- Kaufmann's Tavern in
  Gambrills Maryland.   About three years ago, the Kaufmann brothers
  (second generation owners) sold the restaurant.  The new owner posted
  some stuff on a revised web page that made it seem like he was going
  to move the restaurant into new directions to attract a "younger"
  crowd.   Hence, we stopped going there.

  We went tonight -- it is on the list as one place to consider.   It is
  about 20 miles, 30 minutes from our house.   The web page is:

  Some relevant prices from their menu:
  12 oz prime rib $20
  jumbo lump crab cakes $22 (two)
  Broiled seafood combo $28
  dozen crabs $35 for medium to $80 for monsters.
  all you can eat crabs $28 (these would be medium or less)
  fish and chips $18

  Gail had fish and chips platter and I had the broiled seafood combo.
  The combo had one crab cake (about 5 oz according to the waitress), a
  fairly decent size piece of salmon, three good sized scallops and
  three large (not colossal) shrimp.  There was a house salad with
  Italian dressing and a bread roll included.   I had the house beer
  (crabby ale -- a little more dark than pale ale).  Gail and I shared
  tastes of each other's order.

  Final price including tax and drinks was $56 for the two of us.

  The salmon was quite good.  The scallops were very good, tender and
  juicy with just a touch of spicy rub on them (red pepper?).  The
  shrimp were shrimp -- not great but good.   When it came to the crab
  cake though, I'm afraid I cannot give it good marks.   Although it
  tasted good, it was definitely *not* lump crab meat.   Although it did
  not have much filler, the meat was shredded with little evidence of
  backfin lumps as it should have had.

  I asked the waitress where the crabs came from.  She said that she had
  to admit that at this time of year, the Maryland crabs are not yet
  running in sufficient quantity.  Hence they do get crabs from the gulf
  states.  She also said that at the end of July, their crabs will be
  mostly from Maryland.

  The final result is that Gail and I think that we will put Kaufmann's
  back onto our list of places to go -- but we were not impressed with
  the crab cake.   I am not really an expert, but do know what I like
  and this one was not it.   Next time we go, we'll probably order what
  used to be our standard -- pound of steamed shrimp and a middle sized
  cut of prime rib.

  In selecting a place for the group to possibly have the "Maryland Crab
  Experience", crab cakes and steamed crabs are an important part of
  that choice.   Steamed crabs are not going to vary too much from one
  place to another -- but the crab cakes will.   Our recommendation of
  restaurants for the group decision will include a judgement on their
  crab cakes as an important factor.  Another important factor will be
  the availability of other items for those who don't care all that much
  for crabs.

  I do not know what their prices are yet.  It is a bit further away,
  just to the north of Annapolis, 33 miles and 45 minutes from our house
  according to the mapping program.
