Those Falafel thingies you sent were fantastic! Oh and the Jamaican curry will
just make it through til I leave. Charlotte has taken a liking to
curry-coated 'fish sticks' (Japan fish sticks, whole fish on a stick) so we've
been making them in the rotisserie.

No real recipe, just olive oil, a bit of sesame oil, 1/2 tb jamaican curry,
thumbnail dark miso, marinade for the night then fix next day. About 1/4 cup
olive oil (the cheap kind is fine). The extra marinade once done, is used to
boil pasta (water added).

Thai cookery uses curry pretty often and I got more into it after getting out
here. It ised to be just somethng I ate when out on the town for the most
part.

Oh, we have a new neighbor in the building named Ellen who's from England.
She's having trouble adapting to the more spicy foods encountered in the
building but she's adventuresome and slowly getting into such. Just like me
she has problems with chiles so I am showing her my own variations and she's
finding curry and comino seeds suit her well in moderation.

She's not used to fish much except canned kippers. She's working tonight so
her 2 kids are here finishing their homework and dinner later. Her husband is
out at sea so when she has to work the later shift, like most of us here, she
has a few of us to farm them out to (no baby sitting fees) then returns the
favor as needed. One of the kids (Donny, age 9) is a very picky eater but the
other (Sam, age 13) says he eats anything.

I told'em to ruffle the kitchen and see what seems interesting. Donny wants
rice and green peas and is debating over the asian pear. He is agreeable to
just tasting anything else once I told him in my house, no one is ever
required to clean their plate or eat something they dont like but they have to
agree to just a tiny sip/spoon if it doesnt look objectionable to at least see
what it is like. Charlotte sold him on 'pooh bread' (light rye with a little
wheat, warmed in the microwave with butter and just a little honey).

Sam picked out to add to that, a bowl infront of my current crockpot creation
(a bean, pork, red korean dried chile pepper, daikon, mushroom, and stewed
tomato concoction. I forget whatelse i stuffed in there. Its not mouth
burning hot but spicy, yes.). Frozen red snapper but said he didnt want to be
greedy (I told him not to worry, we normally fix many things). The fish is
being steamed. I cut out the backbone and removed the ribs then took the side
I decided was 'top' and cut it free then stuffed it with butter, rice, and
mushrooms with a little lemon black pepper seasoning. We are calling it a
fish samwich <g>.

Gave'em pistachios for an afterschool treat while doing their homework. Both
boys chimed up that only since getting here, did they get anything other than
a sweet muffin or cookie/biscuit for tea but here, no one seems to do that at
all except their Mom.

Ok, they are done with the homework and reading over my shoulder <grin>. Donny
says he's not picky, just 'selective' and he doesnt at all mind getting new
stuff as long as he's not pressed about it. I agree. Seems he's happy to try
a new idea as long as no one thinks it's 'bad' to not like it. Sam shyly adds
he turns 13 in a month. Charlotte adds that Daddy almost always sets her up
with dinner now that she's older but sometimes she eats out when I'm at sea at
neighbors still and their Mom Ellen makes a really good pot roast.

---
Slight break.

Dinner inhaled. Donny ddint like the fish samwitch that stared back at first,
but liked the fish well enough. Inhaled bean-pot after a careful test. Sam
ate everything. Donny loves asian pear. Sam likes better the smaller ones
you can hold in your hand and not have to slice. Charlotte's bento box now
has leftover snapper, peas, rice, asian pear, pistacios, a little lump of
cheese, chunks of 'pooh bread' (ok cold), and 4 black olives, chopped to make
them fit.

Mom now has a tupperware with some of the bean-pot and my best guess of a
recipe that I used for that particular one.

Kids now off playing some pokemon DS2 stuff (The newest one came out and i got
Charlotte a copy advance order so no one else here has it yet).

In the background, as Ellen has to work tomorrow night too and so does Don
while I have duty (wont be home), I'm making up my own version of adobo
chicken (Goya adobo seasoning, 3TB to 4 cups water, add chicken and slow boil
2-3 hours). JUst in case, I made enough for the 3 kids plus Don when he gets
home later that night. It keeps well for 3 days at least in the fridge and
tastes just fine cold.

RH> as you
-> might guess. There's also an 'international frozen bin' which changes
RH> all the
-> time but you can get all sorts of sausages and things like that,
RH> depending on
-> what they have that week.

RH> Now that we don't get. The international frozen here is all hispanic

Well, we see that too but like all such things, it cycles through at the
commisary. Unlike stateside ones, ours just isnt big enough to have
everything all the time so we have to take turns with shelfspace.

-> What I do dearly miss, is a good selection of cheeses. We have only the
RH> most
-> basic of sets here. !sob!

RH> Without the cheese case, I'd be in big trouble. The local Wild Oats
RH> carries just about everything.

Ohh I miss a good cheese selection! I could just about kill for a good strong
brie after 6 years here. Ah well. In a few months right?

                                       xxcarol
