Thats evil Jim!  {snicker, yes}.

I also have them look at mine and look totally mystified when they notice
almost everything is a fresh whole food thing.  A common comment is 'gee,
doesnt it take a long time to make dinner that way?'.

My norm is 10 mins time though the cooking itself often takes 30 mins or so
while I play on the computer.

Mostly I'll spend 15 mins or so loading a crockpot up with goodies but that
meal will last 2-3 days and after the initial loading, take no more time than
it does to dish out a serving.

We do use canned vegetables as a time saver for a side dish and Don often uses
canned mushrooms (sometimes, the canned ones are a better match to a dish than
fresh).  I use canned black olives pretty often.

I get pre-peeled garlic as a time saver too but the cost difference for that
here is minimal so it's like, maybe a dime a week. 1 cup of prepeeled garlic
here is about 20yen more than whole-in-the-wrapper.  Done by hand as the elder
minds the store and waiting for the next customer.  Had a funny as we shopped
a few days ago and the Mama-san was actually out (big pile waiting to be
peeled) and she just wanderd over next door and grabbed some and dropped off
some unpeeled for her friend.  A very non-challant shrug between what was
obviously old friends.  I bought something next door too ;-)  Nice carrots and
some peeled gobo.  I'm sure it was a slight 'setup' but one of the pure
hearted kind and they just 'knew' I'd have to get something next door too <g>.

I've seen these same two trade back and forth 'whatever needed peeling' many
times then swap back su water buckets of peeled stuff.

I mystified them once when I wanted to pay for some potato peelings.  They use
them to feed the livestock.  I wanted to make hash browns in the old southern
way which uses (my tradition) mostly peelings.  The dish isnt as 'pretty' as
some other cuts, but they are fast, flavorful, and very good for you.

Oh, they arent mystified now.  I brought them a little container of them back
last summer.  I adapted the seasoning a little bit to Japan tastes (added
halved garlic cloves) and used chicken fat for that batch as our salt pork
would have been too salty for them in that particular dish.  Japanese dont
seem to associate 'salt' and 'potatoes' like we do.  They seem more apt to
assocoate 'sweet' with that sort of thing.  I added red bell pepper slivers to
make that association and it was a pretty good mix!  While i won't pretend
they have made them themselves since, they are happy to sell me at 5yen a cup,
potato peelings.  They want to give them for free but I insist.
