The most common packet instant noodles here are made by Maggi, but
they come from many other brands and sources.  Most only have the
single flavouring packet, but the Indonesian ones (mie) have up to 3
packets (flavour, oil and chili).  When cooking for myself only in
motels around the Pacific, I often used these noodles for the starchy
component of a fish and vegetable dish.  I added extra water when
cooking for the usual 3 minutes or so, then strained that flavoured
soup into a cup before adding the noodles to the main dish.  The cup
of soup was drunk separately, after the meal.

Another way of dealing with instant noodles is to just cook the
noodles in water without the flavouring, treating them as any other
plain pasta.  The flavour packets can then be added to eggs when
making a breakfast omelet instead of using salt and pepper.

Did you know that recently (when the inventor died) instant noodles
were voted the greatest Japanese invention of all time?  They were
created immediately post-war as a means of feeding a huge, starving
population with very little resources or fuel.  Since then millions of
students who also meet that description have sustained life that way.

      Title: Asian Pesto
 Categories: Sauce, Condiment
      Yield: 1 Servings
 
      1    Clove garlic
      1    One inch piece ginger root,
           -peeled
      2 ts Toasted sesame seeds
      2 bn Cilantro, stems removed
      1 ts Soy sauce
      1 ts Mirin or apple juice
           -juice of 1 lime (about 3
        ts )
    1/4 ts Tabasco sauce
      3 ts Sesame oil (or less)
      8 oz Soba noodles, cooked
 
  Turn on food processor. With motor running, drop garlic and ginger
  into feed tube. Add seeds and cilantro; pulse til finely chopped. Add
  soy sauce, mirin or juice, and then slowly add oil in steady stream
  until pesto is desired consistency. Toss with hot noodles.
