As far as i know, it's only *real* good use is rope making for ship use. 'm not
sure why but the hemp ropes are reputed to be more salt tolerant and a bit
more elastic as the ship pulls against a pier with the tides.

Yes, we use metal based ropes and nylon as well.  Metal in severe weather. 
Nylon is good but it gives little warning before it *snaps*.  Hemp, you can
hear it 'sing' before that happens.  It could be the ones we use are not
actually 'hemp' anymore, but they still call them that.

A month ago, we hit a wind situation and i told the Officer of the deck to call
the Deck Department to the quarterdeck.  (Muster deck department on the
quarterdeck) and i didnt even think twice.  New OOD (Officer of the Deck) had
never heard 'singing lines' before and didnt know what was happening.  Damn
good thing I was just heading down for a check on a duty day at that instant.

We snapped 2 lines in the next 10 mins.  We moor with 14.  We need 10, and the
rest are coverage.  In a typhoon, we moor with 28 I think?  (we normally head
to sea for those so not sure as we seldom are at moor during them).

FYI, 'singing lines' is how it sounds but they start 'singing' then clime to an
almost human 'scream' before they part. Once heard, you never forget that
sound.  It's easy to not really know what's happening the first time though.
It can also be very dangerous as those parted lines whip back and can
literally tear a person in 2.
