Recent sips and guzzles:

Poland Springs Vodka - made in Lewiston, Maine. A cheap brand that
stands up well to more expensive "common vodkas," Poland Springs 
is no more expensive than the crap brands like Bukov or Joe's
Package Store House Brand.  But unlike other cheapos, there's no
rubbing alcohol odor or off-tastes.  A little harsh on the throat
betrays its rough edges.  Great as a neutral mixer, also excellent
for making Jello shooters; not so good for straight shots. 80 proof.

Polar Blueberry Seltzer - I like Polar seltzer in general because it
is very strongly carbonated, so the fizz holds up to lots of ice. (I
find that ice-cold seltzer is extremely refreshing.)  The blueberry
variety is excellent, with a rich, mouthwatering blueberry presence -
not really a flavor, but more like a multi-sensory aroma.  Thumbs up.

Rudy Beverages Blue Raz - Okay, first of all some mockery.  Way back
in the early 1970's, there was this benchwarming loser on the Notre
Dame football team.  His name was Rudy Ruettiger.  He had exactly 27
seconds of game time, in 1975; it was the last play of the last game
of the season, and by dumb luck he sacked the opposing team's QB
allowing Notre Dame to win that game.  These days, Rudy is an 
inspirational speaker with a "never give up your dreams" message.
Another way he spreads this message is through sports drinks for
kids.  His website claims he's "carved his name into history books
as perhaps the most famous graduate of the University of Notre Dame."
Yeah, he's more famous than Joe Montana, Knute Rockne, Carl Yastrzemski,
Condoleeza Rice, and Regis Philbin.  The guy's a legend in his own
mind.  Anyway, he trades on his thirty-year-old fifteen seconds of
fame by bottling sports drinks, one of which is blue raspberry flavor, 
is lower in sugar than most other sport drinks, and tastes like 
a melted blue sno-cone.  Although the drink isn't bad, he puts 
obnoxious "inspirational" bullshit messages on the label.  I will
probably have lots of opportunity to buy this not-unpleasant swill
in about 6 months when all the job lot stores are flooded with his
unsold product.  That'll make me happy, because I'll get the stuff
pretty cheap without giving pathetic attention-whoring self-
delusional Rudy any validation.

Gatorade A.M. - The orange/strawberry flavor is pretty standard
stuff, not horrid but not go-out-of-your-way great.  I think the
only deviation to the regular Gatorade formula is the marketing
gimmick: According to the label, this beverage is designed
to "replace fluids lost during sleep."  That's a pretty disgusting
concept; I'm pretty sure that once my body gets rid of sweat,
drool, and morning pee I don't want any of it back.
