=========================
Hi Glen,

RH> when we lived in NC (actually, only a couple hundred or so miles up the
RH> coast from here), we'd no garage and the car was covered with the pine
RH> pollen daily. Other pollens are bad also but the pine beats all.

GJ> That sounds bad. As you would not be able to leave the windows open
GJ> do you have filtered air in the house?

It is bad; Steve has me housebound today. We're getting a lot of smoke
from th fires south of us. The house has a central air conditioning &
heating unit but the filters that are provided are next to useless
trying to filter anything. We picked up a better one this week end (on
our nickel vs free from housing) and it should help.

GJ> Better filleted and salted or vinegared. :) The vinegar or lemon
 GJ> juice discourages the flies.

RH> Catch more flies with honey than with vinegar? (G)

GJ> There are always plenty of flies around in Summer. Do you know the
 GJ> infamous "Australian wave"?

Never heard of it but you don't need to elaborate; my mind fills in the
details very well.

GJ> clothes-line in small yards is greatly valued. Also, some have found
GJ> that a removable canvas cover can transform it into a very effective
GJ> shelter from the sun or rain when enjoying a backyard barbecue.

RH> Sounds like fun, especially for the children. Camping out without a
RH> proper tent. My folks used the clothes line to air out sleeping bags
RH> after a cmping trip; mom had one of the pulley lines from the back

GJ> I have seen the pulley lines, mainly in Italy, between buildings or
GJ> across narrow streets. The Hills Hoist has four radial arms, each 3
GJ> metres long, with galvanised wire joining the ends, with more wires
GJ> forming five concentric squares. All this is mounted on a central
GJ> pipe concreted into the ground, with a hand-cranked screw hoist
GJ> mechanism to raise it after loading so that tall people don't get
GJ> garrotted by the wires in the dark. It is fun for small children to
GJ> hang from the arms and whiz around until they grow heavy enough to
GJ> bend the supporting pipe; then they get into Serious Trouble.

Sounds like what we had in AZ and MA housing except without the crank
hoist. If high winds were forcast, we just folded up the arms and hope
the system was securely imbedded into the concrete.

GJ> Most Australian houses have a Hills Hoist or one of its clones in the
GJ> back garden. With our generally low rainfall they are very practical.

As was ours at various times. The main problem in AZ during the summer
was the late afternoon thunderstorms but by the time they rolled around,
the clothes had pretty well baked dry. If not, they just went thru
another rinse cycle. (G)

 GJ> Have you tried these?

 GJ> MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

 GJ> Title: Boke Spicy Pupu
 GJ> Categories: Snails
 GJ> Yield: 2 Servings

 GJ> 2 c Chopped apple snails
 GJ> 6 Bamboo skewers
 GJ> 3 ts Soy sauce
 GJ> 2 ts Mirin
 GJ> 1 ts Sugar
GJ> 1 ts Chopped green onion
GJ> 1/2 Inch piece fresh ginger,
 GJ> Thinly sliced and pounded
 GJ> 1/2 Chile pepper
 GJ> 1 ts Vinegar
 GJ> 1 dr Sesame oil

No, I've only had snails once (but that was in HI). Had them in garlic
butter at the Austrian/German place we liked. Not my favorite food but
I'd probably try them again.

For Mother's Day, Steve took me over to Uncle Bubba's Oyster House.
It's run by Paula Deen's brother. We had the seafood dip and each had
half a pound (more like 3/4, actually) of steamed shrimp and a couple of
so-so sides. The shrimp were the star of the meal, followed by Steve's
Key lime pie and the seafood dip. I had pecan pie but it wasn't quite
on the same level as Steve's pie. As we were checking out, we found out
they had a new (2 days old) cook book put out by Uncle Bubba with some
of the recipes for what we had in it. Steve got me that and the 2nd
Paula Deen cook book that has more of what we had. I'll probably collect
more of her books as we go over there again while we're here.

Catch you later,
Ruth
