I seriously doubt that the revulsion from a sick-making food has any
intellectual component whatsoever; rather, I think it would be an evolutionary
chemical sort of defense. Everything I ate I was familiar with, liked, and it
tasted good.  At that time, it was the custom to put room-temp stuffing into a
fowl for baking, so there was no intellectual reason for me actually to be
compelled to spit out stuffing or raw onions, manners or no, for years
afterward.

I'm not doubting that the turbulence was upsetting; I just think that that fact
didn't necessarily mandate that the cherry was wholesome enough for your
inexperienced immune system.

Sounds like it.

And there's a difference between the body's response to food poisoning and to
things it can't digest, in your case, milk, and in my case, too much fibrous
stuff like Shredded Wheat N Bran.  You can still eat the milk products and I
can still eat the cereal, explosions notwithstanding.
