One advantage of red onion in potato salad is that you can
tell that the salad is fresh if there's no color bleed.

Made something with white onion the other day; it was okay
but seemed not to have the flavor of yellow.

Aha. Now I wonder where the fraud originated.

LOUISIANA SHRIMP WITH CREOLE TOMATO AND ONION SAUCE PIQUANTE
cat: seafood, main
serves: 8

1 md Vidalia or other sweet onion, diced
4 Tb olive oil
3 cl garlic,chopped
1/4 c tomato paste
3 Creole tomatoes, seeded and diced
8 lemons
1/4 c tomato paste
2 oz lemon juice
3 c shrimp stock
1 jalapeno pepper, roasted and julienned
1 red bell pepper, roasted and julienned
1 yellow bell pepper, roasted and julienned
1 green bell pepper, roasted and julienned
1/4 c chopped green onions
1 ts fresh chopped cilantro
1 ts salt
1/4 ts cayenne
1/4 ts white pepper
1/4 c butter
2 lb md/lg shrimp, peeled & deveined

Saute onions in half of olive oil. When onions become
translucent, add garlic and cook until blonde. Add
tomato paste and brown about 2 min. Add Creole tomatoes
and cook 5 more min. Add lemon segments, lemon juice,
shrimp stock, and all peppers. Bring to a boil, reduce
heat and simmer 15 min, seasoning to taste. Add green
onions and cilantro. When sauce reaches desired
consistency, adjust seasoning and whisk in butter.

Saute shrimp in remaining half of olive oil over high heat.
Add sauce. Place in a 350F oven until shrimp are fully
cooked, about 10 min. Adjust seasoning and serve.

I was sort of the beneficiary of a typo the other day.

Carol and I were thinking of going domestic for our annual
Thanksgiving week getaway - Key West, the desert Southwest,
the Pacific Northwest among our possibilities. But I was apprised
of an interesting fare to New Zealand, a destination we'd been
saving for a richer time.

I heard that there was this amazing sale, where for the price
of coach one could get to Auckland in business class or for a
couple hundred more, Wellington or Christchurch. I decided on
Wellington, as I have a friend there who could put us up in
his apartment for a couple days, and it's said to be very nice
there. Got us a couple tickets in business with a confirmed
upgrade to first (which normally goes for $14K a person, for a
seat that transforms to a bed) owing to my exalted airline
status. Now, of course, the trick is how to pay the Visa bill
when it comes this week (my father promised to help).

It turns out that somebody had loaded a bunch of fares that
were $10K less than they were supposed to be. It also turns
out that United kept this fare valid for almost a week, and
hundreds of bargain hunters are going to overload the hotels
in New Zealand for the rest of the year.

Assessment. We are going to spend perhaps a bit more than we
had planned to for this year's vacation. We would eventually
have gone, spending almost this amount on coach tickets that
could be upgraded to business. Instead, we're spending a couple
hundred more but will be flying across the Pacific in bed, with
Cuvee Winston Churchill or Veuve Cliquot La Grande Dame at will.

Further to this: no more travel, essentially, for me this year.
