wow! that's a new take in that one! hehehe... this one is generally done at a
busy store checkout... basically, it goes something like this...

cashier: your total is blah...

con: here's a 10... btw, can you change a 20?

cashier: sure...

cashier pulls out change for the 20 and the con takes it (con is +20 having not
given over the 20 to start with) and gives the 10 for the sum of the
purchase... then...

con: ummm... wait, that's ok... i just realized that i'll need that 20 later...
can i have it back, please...

at this point, the cashier has handed the change left over from the 10 and then
pulls out a 20, thinking that they have already gotten it from the con... hands
it to the con (now +40) and with a bit more back'n'forth, the con actually ends
up with all the money "back" plus at least one 20, but in most cases more...
they leave with their stuff for free as well as having gained extra...

it takes finesse and the gift of gab to distract the cashier who, inevitably,
comes out at least 20 short in their till at the end of the shift... i have
actually seen this scam take place and the con end up with 60-100 more than
they had... all by doing the change the mind and "yeah, lemme get change for
it..." "no, best not..." back and forth... i was next in line and asked the
cashier if they had really kept up with what happened and then pointed out that
they had been taken for X... in at least one case, the con was detained and
admitted to the scam... in that particular case, the store manager gave me my
purchases for having helped them out... it doesn't happen often, but when it
does, it can be a hoot to watch and see what happens... what happens after that
depends on many factors ;)
